Hello everyone - just thought I'd introduce myself, I'm a new Jeep owner and I have spent lots of time over the past few weeks reading all the fabulous information on this forum. This really is an amazing source of knowledge.

A few weeks ago I took the plunge and got myself an old 1966 CJ5 Tuxedo Park Mark IV. I'm the third owner (as far as I know), of this Jeep that's spent most of it's recent life in Idaho. The past owners have pretty successfully de-Tuxedo-ed the Jeep, as there's not much chrome left other than the logos on the hood and the windshield hinges. The VIN starts with 8322 though so I'm pretty sure it's the real deal.

All is well so far, the 225 V6 starts right up, runs smoothly, and the Jeep drives great around town.

There's a few basic problems that I can detect so far - 1) the speedometer cable is broken (new one on the way), 2) the E-Brake cable does not attach to anything (as far as I can tell, the Dana 18 X-fer case does not have an emergency brake drum....),
    [IMG]
    3) the driver's rear spring plate is broken and jerry-rigged, so I have a new set coming in FedEx, 4), the springs are flat/shocks are sagging, gonna replace those next weekend,
    [IMG]
    5) there's one bad rusted part of the body where it attached to the rear frame behind the passenger's seat,
    [IMG]
probably deal with that over the winter, take the tub off and really fix her up, and 6)---the worst thing I can see---the driver's front axle knuckle is weeping oil onto the leaf springs, pretty substantially. Could this be a blown bearing in the axle? Or would replacing the knuckles and seals probably do the trick?

I'm not the most technologically adept auto mechanic, but I hope to learn alot about working on Jeeps by dealing with various issues that I am sure will arise with such an old car. FSM is in the mail, thanks to links I found here....

So what things would you guys suggest I check/inspect first, given that there are no obvious significant issues with the Jeep? Someday, I hope to do a complete rebuild.....but int he meantime, is it worth having a compression test done? Should I look into getting the carburetor rebuilt? I already changed the oil twice (man it was black), and replaced the fuel filter. The fan was slightly loose at the front of the engine, and the friendly tattooed NAPA Jeep guru suggested that I replace the water pump lest I suffer from overheating and blow a head gasket. Gonna do that this weekend. Oh and you'll notice there was no fan shroud, so I ordered one of those too from Collins Bros.

Thanks for having a look,, I'm sure I'll have a few questions as I work on her and I will try to not make them be stupid ones.

awesome find, if you dont mind me asking how much you get it for? I just got my hands on a 68, and doing a frame up on it. You lucked out seems like you got a lot more to work with.

For the front knuckle my guess would be the seals.

you can do the compression test yourself, its really easy and the compression test guages are pretty cheap.

is there something wrong with your carb?

I have a 66 cj6 tux model but mine is in a lot worse shape.

Man that t-case sure looks clean? Are you sure it has lube? (just teasing). It looks to me the under body hole is the bottom of the underseat tool box. Also looks like that Delco dist cap is 180 deg out? The window should be near the vacuum adv so you can adjust point dwell. Great pics and welcome to the forum. SAVING ANOTHER TUX you gotta love it.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Yeah, funny that you mention it the distributor does look like it's 180 degrees around the wrong way....is that problematic, as in should I switch it around and/or replace it with a new one?

The heater is from a wrecked '07 Tundra, according to the nice man I bought her from. He was sick of being cold while driving to hunting in the Rockies so he put it in himself. From what I can tell, this guy took excellent care of his Jeep.

Th Xfer case is so clean cause the day I go her home I spent hours underneath her with degreaser and brillo pads scraping all the grease and dirt off everything to see if any of them had leaks.

I bet this is gonna make you guys mad - I got it for the whopping price of $3500.

Rotation of the distributor doesn't matter as long as the rotor points to the #1 wire at #1 TDC. There may be even-odd differences with an odd fire though ... not sure. Still doesn't prevent rotating the distributor, instead halves the number of locations on the cap that you can define as #1.

there are/were two different Delco distributors for the V6 engine.
Delco #s 1110322 and 1100342 used one style of cap (early)
Delco # 1110376 used the other; (late, this is the most common found)
the number is stamped into the thin edge of the distributor housing.
look at the placement of the window in his picture; window is between the posts.
look at the attached picture below; window is on one of the posts.

if it was truly 180 out it would be backfiring, if it even started.

All I'm saying is, If you cant adjust the points while the engine is running, the cap is in the wrong place.

Does anyone know where I could find a replacement fan shroud? The one that showed up today from Collins Bros was mislabeled on their website as fitting pre-76 CJs .....obviously it doesn't fit.....

That's a pretty Jeep you have. My '66' Tuxedo, like yours, has lost most of the Tuxedo parts over the years. I wasn't too impressed with some of the Tux parts anyway. Those chrome bumpers didn't belong on a Jeep! I managed to cave one in on a little bitty tree when the Jeep was new. I was able to trade most of the other parts back to the Jeep dealer for useful things , like a roll bar and the Jeep trailer hitch. Your tail lights are not stock, but the rest looks pretty good. I agree that the valve covers seem reversed.

I gave about the same price as you ($3200) but I bought mine in 1966 and it was new. It's the only 'new' car I ever bought, and it serves me still.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I've enjoyed mine. If you have a dog, beware! I've found with mine, they soon take ownership of the Jeep, and get really annoyed if you dare go somewhere without them.

That's a cute heater. I agree with the previous owner. The Jeep heater wasn't much to write home about. My little daughter and I about froze on a trip one winter. We don't go far in the winter any more, and we live in New Mexico! I can only imagine what 'up north' guys go through.

    John
