I picked up this Jeep last May.

This will be my second CJ5 build. 2 Boys-2 Jeeps. That way they don’t have to cut one in half when I’m gone. My wife says it will keep me busy in the garage and not bothering her.
My first (1962 CJ5) took about 5 years. Most of that was body work. I really hate body work. But I had more time than money and I worked at a sheet metal shop so I had access to steel, laser, and press brakes. My main focus on finding another project was something relatively rust free. I found this Jeep in Dallas. Only a few small rust spots. WooHoo

    My plans are:
    Swap in a 4.3L V6
    SM420
    Dana 30 Ft Axle
    Saginaw Power Steering
    4 Wheel Disc
    2.5” Lift
    31’s or 33’s Haven’t decided yet
    Roll Cage
    Front and Rear Bumpers
    Wheel House notch both sides
I’d like to keep the PTO winch. Has anyone tried this with the 4.3L and Saginaw Steering?

Things that are still up in the air:
Second fuel tank in rear/Fuel system
    Seats
    Wire Harness

I’ve spent the last year collecting parts. I have the engine ready to go. From a 2002 S10, W code. I have the Transmission. 3 Dana 30’s to make 2 good ones. One for the 62’.
Next step is to get the Axle ready and Suspension.
I take my time, but try to enjoy myself.

Is there pretty much no paint and just bare metal on that beautiful CJ5?

The original paint is a silver color. It was painted red at some point. The previous owner started stripping off the red.
I think I will need to blast it to get all the red out of the nooks and crannys. I want to make sure I have a good base.

I'm quite while from paint right now, but I am thinking of a Silver/Charcoal metallic.

I like your plan for the drivetrain and brakes, looks like a fun project.

    Removed the old drive train.

Had to take a few days off the CJ to install a Winch on my wife’s JK. Makes it much easier to buy more CJ parts.

The next step is to position the new engine/drive train. Sounds easy enough but, that also incorporates the Saginaw steering swap. The Steering swap is dependent upon the Dana 30, the Dana 30 is dependent upon the new springs. Looks like everything will get positioned at the same time.

I have the transmission/transfer case adapter on order. Working on steering bits. It’s probably easier to get a new tilt steering column, but I like the old school look of the original column and steering wheel, so I’m going with something like the Advanced Adapters kit. Just trying to figure out what Saginaw box to use. I like the idea of the banjo fittings to help clear the grill, so I’m looking for a box that will work with them.

Then to springs. I’m looking for a 2.5” lift. I’ve narrowed it down to 3 choices. Skyjacker softride, BDS, and Alcan. I have the Softride’s on my ‘62, and have no issues with them, but wonder if the BDS or Alcan’s are better. I’ve no personal experience to compare the others. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with the Alcan’s?

I’m planning on using Rancho RS9000XL shocks. Finding the BDS springs without shocks has proven to be a little difficult.

I’m keeping the old F134. Will be a nice spare for the ‘62

Been working on Front Axles. I have 3 NT Dana 30's to make 2 good ones.
Axle's #1 & 2 are from a junk yard. You get what you pay for.
Number 1 has Disc Brakes and 6 bolt hubs, but inside is pretty rough.
Short side axle shaft is broken. Everything came loose, but no oil inside, just sandy water. Ring gear is missing a few teeth and is pretty pitted.

Number 2 has drum brakes, 6 bolt hubs, and spring perches were moved for a spring over conversion, everything was frozen. It was full of oil. Thank full for the small things. The plan for number 2 is use the axle shaft for #1 axle and the 6 bolt hubs for the #3 axle. Maybe use the ring and pinion?

Number 3 is in pretty good shape. I would like to upgrade to the 6 bolt hubs and use it on my '62. That will be a project for next winter.

Off to the sandblaster this week.

Planning on using Eaton ELocker front and rear. This brings up some gearing questions as I do not find any 19 spline, 3.92 & up Elockers available for the rear. I can find a 19 spline 3.73 & down.
No problems finding a Elocker for the front.

The jeep currently has 4.27 gearing.
I'm new to gearing changes, and wonder with the 4.3L upgrade and 33's, how much of a difference would be felt between 4.27 gearing and 3.73?

Nice job on JEEP #1! Looking forward to your progress on #2. You've got a solid plan I think.

    Some potential insights here:

I thought there were no longer selectable lockers available for the 19 spline D44...(is the Roxor OX locker 19 spline?) From time to time I've seen an old 19 spline ARB unit show up. To go selectable (Eaton, ARB, OX), you may have to convert your existing tapered housing to 30 spine shafts which you can do with Herm's Full Floater kit. Otherwise you're looking at a full axle swap of some sort. The 30 spline flanged offset axle found in the 70-71 CJ's is ideal but very difficult to find and expensive.

As far as ring and pinion goes, 4.27's will be noticeably better with 33's than 3.73's. I run 4.88's with 33's, a D18 with an OD, SM420... and with the V6 I'd say its perfect. To me the lower gears are worth it.

Lastly on springs,... Lots of folks are happy with the BDS springs. I run BDS rear springs in the front and rear. It takes a little planning and minor fab work to get the longer springs set up in the front, but the improved ride and increased suspension articulation is worth it. Other viable options to consider are Holbrook Long Leaves (which I understand are available again), and a YJ spring conversion which are both wider and longer...lots of info on this here. With any longer spring conversion it is also IMO a good idea to work out a solution for longer shocks in order to accommodate the increased wheel travel.

I was hoping to avoid the Full Floater route. I'll check into the Roxor OX locker.

I received my SM420 to D18 adapter today. A very nice piece from Novak.

I decided to go with the BDS 2.5" lift springs. I got them on order this afternoon.
Spent a lot of time last week looking at selectable lockers. Nothing available for the rear 19 spline Dana 44.
Still planning on the Eaton Elocker for the front. From a drive-ability stand point, I really like selectable on the front. Will get the parts for the front axle on order this week.

I love the patina on that rig. People play money to get something to look like that. I would clear coat it, and build the rest like new.

You have a flanged or tapered D44 in the rear? Not a big deal to change out flanged shafts to 31 spline and get a selectable locker. Moser can make those axles easily. Build looks great (y)

On the front D30. The one picture shows a 6 bolt mount for the caliper mount. I guess you are using that. The Chevy K-10 front disc brake parts will bolt up to that. The Chevy brakes are a better system than the ford which is on it. Chevy parts are more available and cheaper. You will have 2 different bearing sets on the spindles

On the steering column. I used a tilt column and glad I put it in. Went with a smaller diameter steering wheel. The new column has self cancelling turn signals and emergency flashers switch in it. The steering column is black. It attached to the dash in the same spot as the original column.

Great setup, I have the same, 4.3, sm420, dana 18 with 4.56 gears and 33” Toyo M/T’s. I put in an overdrive and can cruise 65 at 2,200 RPM. Without OD I was about 3,000 RPM at 65, a little too high for a long drive. Looks like a great project, I’ll be watching!
