    Hello everyone,
So I have a weird issue. I have a 65 cj5 with a t90 transmission. I parked it is my garage last fall when I bought it.(drove it in) I changed all the transmission and transfer case fluid. Now I just went to drive it out and no clutch. If I I start it in gear it drives and I can shift with out the clutch any ideas?

Friction disc is probably stuck to the flywheel.

    X3.

Get someone with a suitable tow vehicle. Chain ‘em up, leave a little slack. Get in the Jeep with it in first or reverse (doesn’t really matter), hold the clutch in (released). Have the tow vehicle give a lite jerk. Careful to hook to strong towing points on both vehicles. Usually will come loose.

Yes stuck to the flywheel, it happened to me under identical circumstances. I jacked it up, got the wheels spinning full speed & jammed on the brakes- took a few time but it let go with a good sized bang.

Start it up with the clutch pedal held to the floor. Get it up to around 25-30 mph in 2nd gear, then floor the throttle, and quickly back off, causing the Jeep to jerk back and forth. Keep jerking the Jeep on and off with the throttle, all the while holding the clutch to the floor. It should un-stick the clutch. You might have to try this in 3rd gear.

I sometimes fix this situation by putting the front bumper against a tree. Crank it up in low range first, clutch pedal to the floor.

Less dramatic but sometimes you can just drive it around with the pedal depressed. It just might let go peacefully :)

    Had that happen to me a couple of times. Stepped on the brakes and bumped the starter. Worked for me.. { Had it in gear}

Thanks for the advice, but it did not work for me I blew the head gasket and now I have a heck of a grinding noise coming from the transmission, sounds like a may have shattered the clutch.

Well, look at it this way.
Those 2 parts where probably worn enough that they broke now under stress. Better to find that out now than on the trail somewhere:n:

But that's about how my luck has been going this last couple weeks trying to get my brakes working again.

If you blew the head gasket in that endeavor, it was going to go anyway. Unrelated. I suspect the transmission noise may actually be pieces of the clutch lining being food processed in the bellhousing. That too was likely in need of attention if it sheared.

    Transmission or clutch???

I don't think that would have happened unless it was a bigger pre-existing problem, just waiting to happen.

I once had a jeep clutch simply disintegrate and shed its 30 year old lining. Or, sometimes rodents pack clutch housings with their debris, which jams the release fingers.

You can spin the lining off of a clutch disk by centrifugal force.
One of our customers at the Jeep dealer had a '72 J2000 with a 304 and T-18.
He was in the desert, and rolled down a small hill in gear with the clutch in.
The clutch disk spun so fast that all the lining came off.
Like handfulls of wool in the bell housing.

    Fascinating.

That's exactly what mine looked like. But no overspeeding was involved.
