California original 71 CJ5 Renegade II with all the original emissions crap still on it. I was hoping to keep it original but I believe the anti-bf valve is bad with no replacement available.
Can I just take the drive belt off the air pump or do I need to remove all the emission parts including the individual injectors and plug everything?
(It is the V6) It's been backfiring when shifting gears especially when engine hasn't warmed up. I've checked for vacuum leaks and read every post on the subject I could find.
    Thanks Baxter

The smog items were removed from my California 1970 v6 years ago, all removed and plugged off. Backfiring while shifting I would look at carburator or ignition components, if you have checked vacuum.

Those "gulp" valves were very problematic and can cause the backfire condition.
Removing the belt is one way to disable the system, but your pump will freeze up from non-use.
Regardless retain all components if you choose to remove it all.

There are vanes inside the air pump that turn in a cavity to make the air pressure.
The vanes will rust solid if not used.
When I removed the working pump from my J20, I sprayed something into it to keep it from rusting in storage.
Don't remember if it was penetrating oil or Fluid Film or what - something.
Suggest you remove the pump and belt, and plug the hoses.
No need to remove the manifolds - there is some risk of damage if you remove them.

I have the same GM air pump on my Triumph TR8. It used to shoot big fireballs out the tailpipes when shifting on aggressive acceleration. I removed the belt after liberally spraying WD40 into the air pump with the engine at idle. 15 years later, the pulley still spins free by hand.

Thanks. I'll make sure and spray it.

My air pump is long gone and all related hardware.
Any leak in your standard exhaust can cause a backfire. The unburned hot fuel mix can ignite with the fresh air leaking into the exhaust.
Yes, it's a thing! I had similar issue until I completely sealed & replaced my entire exhaust system.

Thanks. I removed the pump and bracket and plugged the hose coming off the pump. Took it for a 10+ mile drive and so far it quit backfiring!

You bring up another question. If there is an exhaust leak, wouldn't it just be exhaust leaking out. It doesn't make sense that outside air could leak in?

During deceleration, air can leak in and cause a backfire.
Also, between shifts, when the engine slows down quickly. That's when mine would 'pop'.
