Is the adapter between a t86 to a Dana 18 the same as on between a t18 and a dana 20 case? Both out of jeep cj's

There is no adapter needed for the t86 to d18 Texas pattern is cast and machined into the trans case

Not sure where that adapter comes from but it isn't a T86. That transmission mates to the D18 identical to the T90, the only real difference being the diameter of the rear bearing retainer.

    T86 is a 3 speed, do you have a 3 speed or 4 speed?

If it is indeed a T86, there should be no adapter. The casting may look alot like an adapter, but it's cast into the trans.

Do you have any pictures of your setup that you can post here?

Ok I have a T18 mated to a Dana 20 sitting on my shop floor out of a 1976 CJ7 and a T86 mated to a Dana 18 in my jeep a 1966 cj5 v6. The t18 has a plate between it and the Dana 20. I have not looked under my jeep . I just assumed it would be the same as what is on my floor.

If you haven’t looked how do you know you have a T-86? Never assume on these old Jeeps.

The t86 adapter if any is longer and on the front of the transmission. The t86 transmission is something like 2.5" long with a 9" transmission.
The t18 is about 12" long plus about an inch. Overall the driveshafts will be ok to run for a while but you will need to measure and verify.
We cannot assume it is stock. Your driveshafts may not work due to some crazy lift or axle swap that is yet to be identified.

Do we think you mean you have a T98 4 speed in your 66? That would have the same adapter as the T18.

Actually there were 2 different JEEP adapter plates made.
One for small hole D18 with T98 and the other was for large hole D20 with T18.
The index bore diameter being the only difference.
    3-5/32” vs 4” index bore.
