Got the headlight rings and fender flares off. Then I scrubbed the whole thing with Scotch Brite:

Next I need to blow it off, wipe it down with some thinner and do some basic masking.

I can't decide if I want to leave the diamond plate bare aluminum for that 70's look or paint it blue to hide it a little:

Here's some more pictures of the lovely body and why I'm fine with rattle can paint and banging it into trees:

Is this the right amount of patina to shoot for?

That is without any doubt the reason for most of that application. I like the "leave it" and bash the hell out of it.

If the body has any less than this much damage in a year, I’ll be disappointed.

The glorious task of masking has begun.

When I was taking off the driver side wiper arm, I set the special Toyota nut on the cowl. Then 30 seconds later, I noticed all the dust and junk removing the wiper had also dropped on the cowl. Without thinking, I instinctively brushed it off, sending the nut flying under the pile of parts that is the nearby CJ-2. 45 minutes later after moving a D60 axle, a bunch of rubber mats, and an entire CJ-5 lift kit (that was stashed under the CJ-2), I finally found the nut UNDER one of the jackstands holding it up. What a waste of time that was:

Its always the LAST place you look.....

BTDT, dropped parts plenty of times expecting them to be on the floor, when they decided that hiding in a crossmember or on top of the transmission was the best idea ever..... more time wasted, I guess....

Snuck out to the shop after the wife and dogs went to bed and laid down some paint to see how this is going to go.

    So far, I like it:

Once it's dry tomorrow, I'll take some Scotch Brite and "age" it a little. I did a multi-layer process so different things will come out depending on where you sand through the blue.

First is a layer of red oxide primer over the high spots:

Dark grey primer over the low areas:

Light gray primer in the mid areas:

Dark blue in the low areas:

Then finally royal blue with a little dark primer and dark blue fogged over that:

We'll see what it looks like when it gets scuffed.

After that, I was getting light headed. I'll have the doors open when I do the rest of it tomorrow.
