Decided to make some half doors for my cj5 to cj6 project. Had a set years ago and liked them for winter wheeling when I just had a Bikini top on the Jeep.

$400 was out of the question for a new set of fabric ones so I decided to have a go at making my own with what I had laying around. I had a 1 old wire door frame for a 76 on up cj5 so I used the lower half to use as a template. I had a sheet of 1/2" PVC Ridged sheet paneling laying around so I used it for the body of the doors.

Once these were cut out and fitted to the door opening I made some brackets out of angle and pipe stock to make a lower half set of lift hinges to work along with a set of Kayline door brackets I had in the stash. I stole the idea for the hinges from Christian Hazeltons cj6.

After fabri-cobbeling the hinges together I painted them and fit them on the tub. I only had 1 door handle so I had to fabricate the pass side handle. These open like the old kayline ones where you reach in to unlatch the door.
After sanding the panels and cleaning them up I painted them textured black on the outside and tan on the inside.

These won't afford any more safety protection than a canvas half door. I've always considered these to be items to keep some heat in and afford some false sense of security for folks that have never ridden in a old cj before.

Anyway.. Fun little project and I think they came out pretty nice.

Very nice! I’ve always found them great to keep mud, water, and dust deflected out. If you put a “pouch” on the inside that would be very convenient for a strap, drink bottle, whatever.

Looks good. My 6 came with some old half doors that were torn and beat. So I had some old aluminum doors that I cut out to make some.

I did something similar and built two piece doors for my hardtop. I found some little bags at the surplus store and they turned out nicely
