    Hello, all.

My ignition switch sometimes gets sticky when the temperature drops. Everything still works fine but every once in a while I need to manually turn the key back to the run position. I found THIS THREAD on taking apart and completely cleaning and rebuilding a switch but I’m wondering if anyone else has had this issue and how far they needed to go to get everything operational.

What say the rest of the gang? Is this worth completely taking the switch apart or is there a good quick fix?

Try some graphite spray or similar into the switch, see if that frees the sticking first.

Thanks, all! Feels much better after a few shots of WD40. We’ve got some cold weather rolling in soon. Hopefully that all it needed!

"Whale oil is hard to get these days."

Yes, and it can get you into a lot of trouble if you do get any. One of my father's hobbies was working on old pocket watches and clocks. When I cleaned out his workshop 20 years ago I found a bottle of whale oil. He had bought it back before it became illegal to own it, but I had no proof of that. I have no idea where that stuff went.

Please continue to take my learned advice, y'all. :schooled:
Throw the Graphite away, Stop using WD-40 ( It's primarily water ) , & start using Tri Flow or Silicone spray. Y'all will thank me in 5 Years or so.....

Was wondering when the "Lockman" would respond. Heed his advice, he knows a lot about locks.

WD-40 is not what many seem to think it is. Its main usefulness is in displacing water, it is not a penetrating oil, nor cleaner. It does have a lot of unusual uses, but it is not something I would spray into a lock.

Once I was involved with taking a bunch of inner city kids trout fishing using fly rods.

One of the kids was catching a lot of trout, and when the guy in charge of the outing noticed he was spraying his fly with WD-40 he made a big fuss about it, saying it was polluting the stream. I doubt a few squirts of the stuff did any environmental damage, but that kid sure caught more fish than the rest of them. It made the dry fly float better, and may have also worked as an attractant.

dangit, now I gotta dig into WD-40.. My understanding is that it's purpose in life was a light oil that displaced water.. Hence the name.. Water Displacing, 40th attempt.. But that's from memory of something I read many years ago. Tri FLow is good stuff, I always used it on my MTB. For penetrating oil (and sometimes a cleaner) I use Kroil. Expensive, but worth it. I have tried just about everything for the ways and bare metal on my lathe to keep the flash rust at bay even 90W, motor oil etc and so far WD-40 seems to do the best.

&.... Why is it " Wierd" ? ' Cuz a suspected Paid spokesperson, Robert Roy Britt , states " WD-40 does not contain fish oil, contrary to a popular myth, nor does it contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)." ?
Especially after he states " the company claims. Its ingredients are a secret " ? So how does he know what it does or does not contain ?
I've also read somewhere that I have forgotten , that claimed that the Latter dead guy was a P.T. Barnum wannabe.
.....Convair was a mismanaged Company , as far as their Science knowledge went. When they went defunct , the put a Lot of people out of work . Their Company named was the base for many a Joke , back in about '96 or so.
    AnyHoo.....That's how I heard it .:)

WD-40 is a lubricant and it does displace water. It does not contain water.

    From their Safety Data Sheet:

Jeepenstein, it is a lubricant and does displace water. From their SDS sheet - Product Name: WD-40 Multi-Use Product Aerosol Product Use: Lubricant, Penetrant, Drives Out Moisture, Removes and Protects Surfaces From Corrosion Restrictions on Use: Restrictions on Use: None identified
ITLIKSEZ: From their SDS sheet - Product - 3 - Composition/Information on Ingredients: LVP Aliphatic Hydrocarbon, Petroleum Base Oil, Aliphatic Hydrocarbon, Carbon Dioxide
Lockman, you correct at what it doesn't contain but if you read their SDS sheet, you can see what it does contain. What isn't known or shared is their formulation: Note: The specific chemical identity and exact percentages are a trade secret.

I think the thing about WD-40 is that at first we thought it was a space-age miracle. After a few decades we've discovered it is not a durable lubricant.

These days I buy ATF by the gallon, and load it in squirt can oilers.

    Jeepenstein,
I started using Fluid Film for such after Sterclan recommended it & our Son was charged with a US Coast Guard Test of all the major players in it's class. It was the proven winner in that Test.

I've been using this stuff for awhile now and I really like it, totally different than regular WD.

Looks cool , but I have zero knowledge of it, until you showed us this, Maury. I Reckon I just go by the old adage of " Ya dance with the one that brung ya " :)
? ....That's a purdy cool applicator there, though.
