67 Cj5 Build Thread By A Rookie

Just checked mine and not only are my chains too short to lay flat, but the hook ends are backwards hahaha.

 

X2, this is how I have hooked mine too for years. With the factory chains of course. We often used the tail gate for a cook table when camping.

 

That’s the way I hook mine with the stock chains and the tailgate lays flat

 

Rear end is done. Chains are sorted out, wiring is done, bumped is powder coated and installed.
Front bumper is powder coated and installed. I’m going to work on the winch after everything else is done. Front fenders are installed and painted, although passenger fender is just temporarily installed and needs to be rebuilt and repainted. I will do this when the weather is bad. Windshield is installed and stable. I need to repaint and get new glass - again, to be done after I have the JEEP running and tuned.

 

Drain covers installed. The thumb screws were from McMaster Carr. 1/8 neoprene contact cemented on bottom of the covers. The dust on the floor makes the new paint pop!

 

I was working on headlight/horn wiring yesterday. I just need to sort out where I am attaching the grounds. I was planning to ground directly to the frame since the grille and fenders are not directly grounded (the tub is grounded), but I’m not sure whether to drop ground cables from both the passenger and drivers sides (probably electrically better) or run the grounds to one location like a distribution bar on the driver fender connecting to the frame (cleaner look). This is my temporary stand off plate for the headlight relays. The final draft is painted and drying.

 

This is where the wiring is right now.
Passenger fender - hot line coming off battery side of the fuse from the alternator going over the grille to feed the relays.


Driver side with runs going to rear lights/gas tank, dimmer switch, and front lights/horn/brake sensor.


Relays/horn/brake sensor with most of the wiring done. I still need to hook power to the relays and ground relays, headlights, horn, park lights.


Relay mounting plate. This uses existing holes on the fender.

 

Did you make your rear bumper or buy it? It looks good!

 

It was on the jeep when I bought it.

 

Kinda looks like it was made from 3x3 or 3x4 steel tube. neat job too.

I am essentially finished with all of the wiring. I need to secure the front harness and tidy some things up, but otherwise here is the finished relay setup.

The hot line comes over the grill and over to the in line circuit breaker where it feeds the two relays.

The grounds from the passenger lights also come over the grill to the drivers side. The bus bar has grounds from the front lights, relays, and horn and has a 6ga line going to the frame where I got a nice fresh surface.

 

the breaker should be at the battery end so the whole wire isnt still hot if it trips.

x2, the closer the better. I too have a buss bar for my grounds, and a bigger ground cable from the buss bar to the grounding point of the battery cable on the engine block.

Here the circuit breaker is under the red plastic shield. The wire from the solenoid to the circuit breaker is not protected. The circuit breaker is as close to the positive source as possible.

 

what amperage circuit breaker do you use for your headlight relays? Also is it an auto or manual reset?

Well, there I go trying to be smart and eliminate an extra set of connections! Just for clarification, there is nothing fed by the hot line before the breaker.

The photo below is how I originally had it wired. I still have the small jumper cable, so this should be a relatively easy fix.

I have a 6ga wire from the bus bar to the frame. This only grounds the headlights, relays, park lights, and horn. Do you guys think that is too small?

 

After I put the breaker back where it belongs, what is the best way to connect the red to the relays? One of these?
