In 84, I think the common v6 was the somewhat undesired 2.8 (same as jeep used in the early xj)....but how do you differentiate it from the 3.8v6? In other words, what v6 is this one?

If that is indeed a 1984 it should be the 229 cid engine. Like the 4.3, all 90 degree small block Chevy based and the only difference with the 4.3 is the bore and the crank. The 229 might be called semi-oddfire. That would likely be an ok swap if it didn't require any work.

I think it's the 90deg semi odd 229. Definitely that or a 90 deg 200. The front mounting bosses are a good indicator as is the rear of the block has the 3.3l 3.8l or 4.3l

    I ran a 200 for a while until I sank it. 98hp and 160ftlbs or so.
I would go for a 4.3l there is too many weird things to deal with.
I still have the exhaust manifolds on my 4.3 because the driver side dumps at the same location as a 2.2l

The 229 and 200 have a split crank like a odd fire Buick making the rods unique. The distributor also has a special rotor.
2 main oil galleys instead of three limits the redline to 5500 rpm.
They also use the smaller clutch and flywheel.

the 3.8, if it has a distributor, has it at the front, just like a 225
Nope, only BOP GM's the Chevy 229/3.8 is based on the 305, distributor in the rear.

Another issue is they only have large cap distributors. The long water pump needs converted to short and they were basically all automatic transmissions. The timing mark and harmonic balancer are different an all around pain. Overall height and width were good it just wasn't that great for the effort.
Here is a 200 for reference:

Thanks for the tutorial...so the 2.8 is a 60 degree v6, whereas the 3.3/3.8/4.3 are 90 degree and based off the sbcv8.

Not all were autos. I had a 79 Malibu with a 200ci V6, 3 speed Saginaw and posi rear.
Just the way GM built it...
