It's going to be a great year with this big winter we're having. Snow banks in July!

Tim, I liked your trailer's rear signage, "Rubicon Springs Yacht Club."

It appears the trailer picks your line for you or you have to adjust for it. This is great...keep it up. Your lucky to live near so many great trails.

You know, once I stopped worrying about the trailer, it gets much easier. In most cases, just drive the jeep the way you normally would, and the trailer must follow. The other thing that happens is, since most obstacles are just a few feet long, when the trailer gets to it, the jeep has already cleared it, so you're not trying to get both over at the same time. Now, when you get to camp, your buddy following you will tell you how many close calls you had (to dumping it).

That came from the trailer races, we had 6 members of the Yacht Club, and competed through camp, a 200 yard sprint. Actually it's like paddling a barn door, then you sink.

Ok I'll stop fooling around and get serious, this is the Little Sluice, 2017. Nick (18) is now an accomplished wheeler. So I get to ride, spot, socialize...
2019. Back to fooling around. No, we did not clear Soup Bowl with a trailer.

Our annual Barrett Lake run. A great vintage group. CJ5, 3B, Commando, 2A. I don't know why we always stop on the bridge, other than the climb up the other side has a little ***-pucker, and I wouldn't mind checking it out.
More Barrett, remember the pic of the jeep on the ramp with the rear tire below the body? Here it is on the trail.
It'll buff out, right? Yeah, no. Rock garden at Barrett, optional line, and I ran out of talent, almost had it, slid off.

Now where's the fun in that?

I'm old enough to remember when off roading and boat piloting with a beer in hand were legal.

June 2020. I kind of looked around for a better fender than I had, with no luck, so I fixed the one I had. It still doesn't fit as well as it did before the rock incident. But it will pass for this jeep.
This was all in preparation for that summer's festivities, only to have the JJ get canceled. I later had a pint of Woodstock Green mixed up and shot it. We did our own Jamboree, even copied their longstanding menu.
Then this past summer, (2022), 70th JJ, we are having a great run until..the big snap. Rear main leaf broke clean, just outside Buck Island repair station. We limp it in there, and they were still setting up camp, so I borrowed their flat rock, and some Harris Super-Missleweld rod, and welded it up myself. Yes, I am That Guy on this run. Everyone must serve, and it was my turn.
I also used their trailer-mounted stick welder, because they offered, and was easier than digging my leads out. The rod has a high nickel content, and worked pretty well. I went down both sides to the second leaf, and across the break.
Knowing what we are about to get into on the trail, I gave it a wrap of chain, and we set off. It's about 7 PM at this point, and the stop cost us about 45 minutes.
I had zero confidence this was going to hold, and the butt weld at the break did fail in about 2 minutes, but the rest held until camp, at just about dark. Next day I rolled the jeep into the main camp mechanic shack, cut some angle, and fully wrapped the pack and welded everything I could. It eventually got us home.

That is probably the best rod you could have used for that repair. The conditions could have been better. Glad that you were able to come to a solution. The fender looks good.

August 2022. Home from the JJ and I have to go back to work, and still have the jeep ready for the Hi-Lo's Poker Run (Deer Valley) in 3 weeks. Luckily I had a spare spring pack at home, so just have to swap it out.

Old vs new. Some of my crude trail fix visible.
The wrap I did in camp. Don't laugh too much, it held.
Ordered some YJ bushings from WFO, got them in a few days.

With the spare spring pack installed, I did my yearly duty as trail group leader at the Poker Run. The run went well, our participants rigs are getting better and better, makes for a good day. I then spent the fall on Nick's tux, steering radius upgrades, and the parking brake. Then winter hit early November and stuff slows down. As soon as the holidays were over, I was ready to get going on this winter's work on Woody. Time to swap spots.
    Jan 2023
    [IMG]
First on the list, change the other rear spring pack, and install all new bushings. So I bought another RE 1445 spring pack and new bushings. While swapping it, I notice that I might not have enough swing in the 4" shackles, and that could cause binding, and could be the reason for the failure. So I got some 5" shackles from Ruffstuff, and that should solve it. Here you can see the difference.
I think I was trying to keep the height down, but this lack of travel could be the issue. At this point I am concerned about the other pack, so it will be nice to have all new packs, bushings, shackles. I guess this could have, should have, been a maintenance item. Anyway, painted the new shackles.
Installed, it looks much better. The lower eye was almost touching the crossmember before. Yes, the rear end sits a little higher, but after I load it full of Rocky Mountain Spring Water, it will settle.

I run 4"lift YJ springs. They are tall and I wanted to keep the height down a bit, so I used the stock YJ shackles. What I found was the stock shackle swing is not long enough with the high arch springs and stops articulation. I imagine the springs ended up flexing like a W instead of having the ability stretch out and flatten. I put on 2" lift shakes and the ride quality and other issues subsided.
