I have a 72 CJ-5 and need help identifying the starting column. All the post and vids I’ve watched show a lower steering shaft which telescopes. My lower shaft is solid from firewall joint to steering box joint. It sounds like I need to replace a bearing in the upper column and don’t know what to order for. Thank you for any insight. Pics to follow.

I’m pretty sure all the AMC Intermediates (‘72-‘75) had a lower shaft with a collapsable feature. One piece was solid stock that slid into a larger tubular section. They had while plastic inserts in the joint to keep it snug, but in a front collision, it would allow the shaft to collapse. You likely have non- original parts if you have a solid lower shaft.
The bearings in the upper column often are bad, both at the top and the bottom of the column. The correct column should have a “horseshoe” flange where it mounts in a cutout in the dash. Parts for the Intermediate Jeeps can be pretty scarce to find.

Thank you. I’m trying to figure out how to post pics. Mine has no slip joint.

The intermediates 72-75 did not have a collapsing steering column.
Solid shafts; slight movement only at the bell coupler mounted at the steering gear.
The upper column bearing is the same on all CJs 1941 up to 1975 ?
The lower column 72-75 bushing is available thru aftermarket suppliers.
