I have gotten a pair of really nice seats for my 74 cj5 from the local pick an pull. They are a heavy cloth/ canvas like material as best as I can describe them. The problem is they are grey with some lighter shades of little dots of several colors, not exactly a jeep compatible color. Have any of you tried using any of the interior dyes in a spray can with good long lasting results? I bought a spray can of upholstery dye in black and tried it out on one of the headrest. it kept soaking in with minimal results. Finally after5/6 coats (took most all of the can for one headrest)it looked a fairly decent black color and appeared to be quite durable. Problem is it would probably need 10 or more spray cans to do a seat, could almost have them recovered for less. Thoughts and comments on your experiences and brands of dye.
This is the one spray can I bought. IMG_3340.JPG IMG_2132.JPG

Many many years ago a friend dyed his red naugahyde seats black. Fairly soon the red showed through on the high-wear sections, such as the edges and seam piping.

Modern products may be better, I don't know.

Thanks for your reply, I have been wondering if that could happen, I guess I could just have them recovered but the material must be a really good quality on them, the seats came from a vehicle with about 100k on it and the seat material looks like brand new. A hate to loose that because I bet it would be hard to get as good of recovering material that they already have.

For less than the cost of recovering, I would get a set of Superhides seat covers. I have these in 2 vehicles and they work/fit really well. Most people think that the seat covers are actually the upholstery.

No doubt for the cost of recovering or seat covers, you can get another pair of seats. I would just use the stuff. It would probably be a lot more effective on that fabric than trying something similar on naugahyde which would not absorb much of anything.:watch:

The spray-on colors usually work a lot better on vinyl rather than fabric. As you found out, fabric just soaks up the color. I prefer vinyl for CJ or other open vehicles that can get wet from rain or hosing out. Cloth just absorbs the water straight into the foam padding, just like a sponge.
