You will have to move the carrier bearings to the new eaton case - and its very difficult to pull them off the old case without damaging them. When you did the 5.38s - did you use any set-up bearings? If you don't have any set-up bearings, I'd consider trying to make the existing bearings into set-up bearings, and then buy new ones for the final install of the 4.27s with e-locker. I absolutely love the eaton e-locker I run in the rear D44.

Is the front an open diff now? You should be able to swap just the gears onto the existing locker.
But it is a good time to add an e-locker.

Having done the Eaton install myself, it still requires carrier bearings to be installed in the Eaton case, and those have to be shimmed properly for the r&p set up.

Yeah it's new shims and a dance either way, should be a nice ride when done for every type of road or trail.

I felt like I was reading a who done it and could not wait to get to the end. It is great how the Jeep community will jump in with both feet to help another Jeeper. I remember when I bought and restored a 89 YJ for my daughter, some times as she put it “it went to sleep”. Within minutes another jeeper stopped to help. @jeepstar. I am glad the brain trust on this forum helped to steer you to a solution..

    It's a 100% ready to go unit.

The locker i ordered in 5.38 comes complete with all of the internals already added.

The carrier bearings will need to be pressed on and it will need to be adjusted correctly with the carrier shims provided in the master install kit I also bought.

I'm a little miffed I need to buy 30 spline axles to run it with my 1970 flanged offset dana 44. I can't win. Or better yet, I could if I had done my homework that day instead of just ordering what I thought was right without more info.

Like that Chris Stapleton song: I've got nobody to blame, but me:kumbaya:

Someone here said its a 19 spline

    *EDIT*
Just re read the post i got that from...this is going in my flanged offset rear axle so its 30 spline. Until i count splines though, im not making assumptions. This was an expensive mistake

East coast gear supply just got back to me, that d44 30 spline locker will work in my rear axle.
"You can use the Detroit True Trac with any gear numerically higher than 3.92".

The flanged axle will be 30 spline. The tapered axles are 19 spline (or 10 spline on older Jeeps yet). You should be good to go.

You say your rear locker is 5:38 and front is 4.27 but they don't typically come with ring and pinion gears on them. You can put 4.27 or 5.38 gears on either of those lockers. Maybe you already know, just thought I'd try and add some clarity.

I'm learning this. Thought with the true trac I bought it was 5.38 or bust.

3.92 to 5.38 gears are all “series 4”, so interchange on the open diff, LSD, or locker you are using. You still have to match diff to the axle spline count for your application. Flanged axles (‘71-up) will be 30 spline, and tapered axles ‘55?-up through ‘70 will be 19 spline.
