I believe MidWest Military (Prior Lake, Mn) is the fabricator/manufacturer of the M38a-1 tank wells. I expect they also make reproduction fuel tanks as well.

going over this, I noticed your comment. Use a search engine like Google or Bing to search the site. For example, https://www.bing.com/search?q=site:earlycj5.com+rear+tank+installation Limit the search to this site, pick your key words and try a few different combinations of likely words.

Low teens. My '73 with a 304 would get maybe 14 on the highway. That's what I remember, but it seems unlikely it was that high. Maybe. The aerodynamics are terrible, and wind resistance goes like the square of velocity.

Certainly not. I'll likely be replacing all the floor panels and hat channels (hey, that rhymes!) between the cowl and step up.

I put a rear mounted tank in my ‘58 cj5, had to remove the cross members and I put in a heavy duty skid plate for extra protection. 8F645CB9-0C59-4CAA-A758-963E836BEED2.jpeg

How far does it hang below the frame, is it safe from rocks and such?

It is a pretty common upgrade. With a decent skid plate there should be little problem, and I would much rather have a fuel leak at the rear of the vehicle than under my seat.

Most vehicles made since the sixties have rear mounted fuel tanks, and part of that is getting the fuel tank out of the passenger compartment, which was a good idea.

It sits a little below the frame but tucks up nicely between the leaf springs. Rocks aren’t a problem with the skid plate.

Passenger side rear behind the wheel well where the original spare tire mount was.

From the factory, the '71-'75 rear rank jeeps had the filler above the right tail light so it didn't interfere with the side mount spare. My '71 for example:

Thanks. That picture was exactly what I needed. I am also adding reverse signal lights. PO had cheapish trailer lights in back. I'm trying to pretty it up a bit.

IME, about the only time you actually use those skid plates is when you are playing in the rocks and loose your line.
