I am looking for the correct length of the dipstick for a 72 360 V8. The one I have in my engine is way too short, it only sticks out the lower end of the tube less than an inch. I saw one forum person says his dipstick (giggity) was 20.5 inches long from the cup to the tip. Just wanted verify before I start my search. The dipstick tube is fine so I won't replace that. Now I have to find the missing piece, this engine had some real sketchy fixes. It had white bathtub caulking for a oil pan seal. Thanks.

Thanks I saw that also. I read some bad reviews for Omix replacement dipstick. Several people said it was the wrong length.
I did some searching through past threads and it appears like the correct length is 26.5 inches from cup to tip. The other one I saw said it should be 20.5 inches. I just wanted to verify since there seems to be some conflict in lengths. I could always buy the Omix one and mark for what I need once I know the correct length. Thanks for the info.

Open your service manual look in the lubrication chart see how much oil your engine should take. Put that much oil in the crankcase start the engine allow it to run for 10 min until warm to check for leaks and such. shut it off and let it sit for 15 min. then stick your dip stick down into the oil. Pull it out and mark the stick where the oil comes up to thats how you get an accurate dip stick.

That's what I plan on doing eventually. Currently the engine is upside down on the engine stand. I just put bearings in it today. It may be awhile before it's back up and running. I thought something was fishy when I drained the oil (last year), I had to go get another oil pan because it was filling up the first one. I bet it had 10 quarts of oil in it. When I saw the short dipstick, I knew why they over filled it. This jeep has been an adventure. I am trying to undo 50 years of hillbilly fixes. Thanks for the reply.

I own a 304 and a 360. Both have what appears to be replacement dipsticks (one by me), but they are a little different in construction though the same length. About 20 1/2" or 20 5/8" from the tip to the base of the cup. One is marked 3224880.

Thank you very much, that helps a lot. Just wanted to make sure that if I buy an aftermarket one it is not too short. I can mark it myself once I get everything back together. Happy 4th!
