My son, who is quite tall, has started driving my cj5 as his daily. I need to get the seat lower and further back.
My gut is that I need to replace the gas tank with an underbody one.
    Any advice?

Do a search for “wheelhouse notch”. It allows the seat to be moved back quite a bit.

How handy are you and how original do you want to keep the jeep?
Wheelhouse notch is likely the quickest and easiest.
Rear tank has additional benefits For under seat cargo.
Passenger tank is also an option if you don't have the toolbox (mine doesn't have the toolbox and I ran a passenger tank for a few years)

I have a very long torso and was looking over the windshield with the seats installed by the PO. I installed kirkey aluminum seats and I can get them plenty low (even room to install sliders). And since the back is so thin, it eliminates the need for a wheel notch unless your legs are crazy long.

And despite the looks, they’re actually quite comfortable.

They’re kirkey vintage class bucket seats. Mine are the 17” model. https://www.kirkeyracing.com/category/S55V/55V-Series-Vintage-Class-Bucket

I have since built some more original looking seats made from old bed frames, but with a more comfortable laid back geometry. the kirkey seats are eventually going in my 67 mustang.

You can also go the other way.

A tilt steering column and/or a quick release steering wheel.

It won't fix pedal distance but will give added room around the column and much better egress as well as theft deterrent. You can also get wheels in different dishes and diameters, which will change the reach.
