Hi Folks, I’m new to the forum. I just bought a 62 CJ5 with a mild lift and 34x9.5x15 Interco Super Swampers on stock 15” wheels. I’d like to go to a slightly shorter radial tire
But keep the stock wheels if possible. Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m very excited to have this Jeep and plan on driving it as much as possible. thanks for your time.

    Welcome from Oklahoma!

Tire size is all over the place on old jeeps, depends on lift, intended use, etc etc. I am running 31", my original stock size would have been H78-15 which is about 30" tall I think. Serious trail runners use 33s or larger.

The tire size question is a can of worms, no simple answer. If you read through builds posted on our site you will get a good idea of what will work for you.

You can definitely get shorter tires, but width may not be what you want or can use - they won't be a narrow as your current 9.5. The challenge with tire size is magnified when using OEM 15x4.5 rims. The 34x9.5x15 swamper is pretty unique in being relatively tall and skinny. You can easily drop to 33" tires, but standard width would be either 10.5 or 12.5. You could drop to 31s, but they are typically 10.5 wide. You've got to drop all the way to 30" tall to keep the 9.5 width. P-metric sizing does not help much as the profile ratio for 15" rims is 70 or 75, meaning they will be wide. Fir a tall skinny look, many people like 235/85/16 (32"), but you need the 16" rims.

There might be better size options if you go bias ply....Coker tire has some selection, although you may still be limited with by the 15" rim...

What gears does you Jeep have in the axels? That is what makes the difference, if they are 5:38 you would want a taller tire, if they are 4:27 you could use a tire that is lower. I have the same size as original on 15" X 7.5" wide wheels, the wide tires are hard on the Ross steering. Good Luck.

Can you post a picture of what it looks like now? I can't imagine a 34 x 9.5 Swamper fitting on a stock wheel. 9.5 on a 4.5 wheel?

Is the CJ still running the stock F head? Stock transmission? Even with 5.38 gears, those 34" tires would really eat into the on-road performance with the 134. And if it has the 4.27 gears that began in 62, third gear would only be useful going downhill. I would be sticking with 31" or shorter. Those H78-15's Homersdog posted actually worked very well on a stock Jeep.

5.38 was standard on all CJ’s since 1945 with no options.
In Nov of 1962 ( 1963 model year) the standard became 4.27 and the 5.38 gear sets remained as an option.
The T90 C became standard at that time and the T90-A was no longer available.

I thought the general grabber at2 was available in a rather narrow 15" and they are rather lightweight.
