Long story short: I've moved to Richmond, VA, and I'm looking for a Jeep mechanic to help me with a couple of things that are, realistically, beyond my abilities, especially now.

Anyone know a mechanic who is an ace with old Jeeps (see below)? This could be a shop or just a guy.

If you have an answer, send me a private message or post an answer here.

Note that this is not a restoration-type job. It's a 1946 CJ2A with a late-'60s Dauntless V6 and lots of other non-original gear, including the transmission. Lots of work done cowboy-style by my father and his friends.

I talked to the guy at a 4-wheel-drive shop here, and they seem great, but I thought I should ask around first.

    Thanks!

Other than the tapered rear axles, just about any decent mechanic could handle anything else. The only thing unusual about the Dauntless is the out of phase timing which earned it the nickname "Odd Fire".

The 67 CJ5 I bought had been taken to a reputable 4-wheel-drive shop for brake work by the previous owner. They ruined the rear hubs by improper installation, which is why I mentioned the tapered axles. Most of the younger mechanics, which are not focused on earlier Jeeps, have probably never seen, let alone worked on those.

Are you actually talking about Richmond, or Newport News? I use Gary Chapman's in Mechanicsville for all my repairs that I can't handle.... he's an old school stand up mechanic, and Tom, the head mechanic, is ornery but awesome.

What are you trying to do? A lot of the work translates, whether 1946 or 1975.

Pm me to discuss if you want. I'm east of Richmond in New kent, and would be happy to help.
