So I live in Southern California and I am in the process of a 1969 CJ5 rebuild and was considering with all of the other work I am doing to it, I probably should have the T14 transmission re-built just to be safe.

Well I have called around and I am getting estimates of $600-$700 for just the rebuild (no hard parts like gears).

Does this seem expensive to anyone else for such a simple transmission?

You don’t need a press or any real special tools just snap ring pliers to rebuild it . A good rebuild kit is around 300 dollars rebuild it your self. The price is not to far out of line .

Are you talking about a rebuild kit that includes everything or just a kit that includes the rings, bearings, gaskets, etc.?

Usually you only need the common wear parts to do a rebuild, unless you have a damaged or severely worn gear or gears, etc. Even those will often run a long time without issue. As mentioned, it isn't difficult to do, I think Homersdog (member here) did a nice write up on his T14 rebuild a year or two ago. You'll get lots of support here too if you decide to give it a try yourself.

Novak has the T-14 master rebuild kit for $166...

A few months ago I rebuilt one and it was hard to find a good rebuild kit that wasn't on back order. But I agree do it yourself.

Mostly you need the front main bearing and the blocking rings. Usual practice is to add a "small parts kit" which includes new roller bearings, thrust washers, snap rings, seals and gaskets. If it were me, I would reuse the factory parts (rollers mostly) after I measured them and compared them to the replacements. Most people would replace the rear main bearing too. I would if I could get a quality replacement, otherwise I would reuse it if it did not have obvious problems (roughness, pitting, slop). This assumes that you have no broken gears and the synchro hubs are in good condition (shifts ok except for minor clash), no coming out of gear, etc.

The TSM specifies a puller to remove the main bearings. I recall you can get the T-14 apart without a puller, but you'll probably need something to remove the bearings from the shafts (ie a press). Last transmission I did, I improvised a puller to remove the bearings (this is the only way with a T-18 - the 3-speeds will come apart, but the bearings will still be on the shafts).

Quadratec has the Crown small parts kit, seal kit and blocking ring set in stock, for about $85 plus shipping. https://www.quadratec.com/jeep-replacement-parts/jeep-transmissions/t14.php

Looks like Timken still makes the input bearing 941658 ca $50. There may only be a Crown part for the output bearing 991307 (I think that's right - it's the number for the contemporary Wagoneer with the T-14), but I did not look for very long. You're still under $200 for parts, barring anything broken or overly worn.
