    I figured out why.
The tank is about 10” deep

    The pickup is barely 7.5”!!

    Tank is from ‘79 CJ
Should I try to straighten out the bend?
Put a piece of hose on the end?
Am I missing a filter pickup part?

I would expect a pickup "sock".
A short length of hose with a metal T on the end might weight the hose down to the bottom and allow an alternate entry if debris is ever in the tank.

Jeep YJ has a 15 gallon tank but a 20 gallon was "optional."

It was the same tank, just different plumbing.

wonder if someone used a pick-up for an underseat tank in the rear tank? When I installed a later rear cj tank, I bought the matching pick-up and it is a bit different (longer) than the underseat one, and works perfectly. The gauge works with either as is (although the float may need a bit of tweaking to 'calibrate').
Honestly, I see you have a 79 tank - so maybe that is a bit different than the intermediate tank (?), but if its all the same, Walcks makes a decent brass float they put on the standard Omix unit:

You can get submersible fuel line. Cut the pickup tube off at the bend and use the submersible fuel line to extend the pickup. I had the same problem.... now when I run my rear tank out it takes 15.5 gals to fill it.

    I'm a Moron.
I looked in the box and found there was an extension/filter/sock thing. Going to have to jam it on harder than the last guy so it doesn't fall off in the tank. I'll look in the tank better for the old one as well.

Glad you got it figured out (y).
