So..... Just to throw fuel onto the Fire , Here's a pic of my '75 :
Lettering After.JPG But , Alas .....It's a ' 74 Tailgate. The 'bar' over the J was not used in '75 :study: Also , all the 'Jeep" tailgates are raised letter type stamping . The 4 wd logos were decals.

This is good reading on the tailgate. Many other items to read on CJ3B.INFO even though you have a CJ5. :study:

The originals are paint and most likely screen printed on the tailgate. No decals from the factory.

Tim is correct, stencil. That's what the factory drawing says.

Thanks for that link, it made for a very interesting read! From that, I was able to find this link, which shows the various stencils used over the years.

Having built an AC Cobra replica, I found it amazing how some vehicle manufactures aren't really worried about consistency. It made it a bit tricky building to give it some original aspects, but it keeps it interesting..
The Shelby Cobra for example, used some parts for only a handful of cars, as their inventory of the others ran out. Taillights, dash gauges, and even engines were varied. A lot of people don't know that many of the 427 Cobra's, actually sported a 428 cubic inch engine. Dash gauges were traditionally made by Smith's, but many Cobra's have Stewart Warner gauges installed. When they ran out of the Lucas rectangular taillights, they opted to use two round ones, originally made for another British car. Even hood and trunk badging (emblems) varied. I guess it didn't help when AC Cars in the UK was assembling the cars, while Shelby American in the US, was modifying things on them once they arrived. Mind you they only built approx. 1000 Cobras, vs 600,000+ CJ5's..

The CJ Jeeps from the mid-50's through the '60's got the "4 wheel drive" stencil on the tailgate. That same stencil, only including the "Jeep" above the "4 wheel drive" was only used on the Willys Station Wagon/Delivery rear gate/door. Many restorations have been completed with the incorrect stencil on the back.
