Since joining the forum I have been perusing this particular area, learning what I can about the early CJ5's. Still a few things allude me, so I figured what better way to get some answers, than to ask.
I have a 69 CJ5 with the V6, built in Windsor Canada. Some things might be different on it because of that, but I am not sure at this point. I'd be happy to learn of any differences. It may save me some grief ordering a part from the US, just to find out it won't work on a Canuck model.

    Anyways..a few questions..to start..

-Did my year/model, come with a rear seat as standard equipment? Mine does not have one.

-Is the rear seat interchangeable with other year CJ5's, in case I find a decent used one available? If so what years?

-Do they make aftermarket rear seats? Are they available in different colors?

-My current front seats, which are still half decent, are dark brown. Would they have been recovered, or was that a stock color available back in the day?

-Did some model year CJ5's come with fiberglass fenders? I'd swear mine are, but I still need to test them with a magnet to be sure. They just feel and sound like fiberglass ones. Monsoon rains have prevented me from doing further evaluation..I don't want to un-tarp it..

-Would my year CJ come with a rear tailgate that had Jeep, stamped into it, or Willy's. It came with a home-made wooden one, which I'd like to eventually replace.

-I see some CJ's with the spare mounted on the tailgate. My mount is on the right rear quarter panel. Would that be the normal spot for it, or because the tailgate is missing, could the previous owner have mounted it there?

    Thanks in advance..

    Rear seat was optional.

They are all the same in width, but the brackets change.

Yes, you can buy an aftermarket rear seat.

No fiberglass fenders from the factory. Aftermarket.

The side mount for the spare is the factory location. No tailgate mounting from the factory.

    What Tim said x 2.

No Willys stamping used on any Jeep parts after mid year 1963 when the name of manufacturer was changed from Willys Motors Incorporated to become Kaiser Jeep Corporation. The actual owner did not change, only the name at that time. The serial number plates changed to reflect this.

Excellent, thank you both. That answers a few of the things I have wondered about ever since I got it.
So being that the rear seat size is the same, is it crucial to get the exact one for this particular model year because the brackets vary? I wondered perhaps the factory mounting points on the body must be adhered to, to ensure adequate strength. Do the mounting bolts go through the floor and into the frame, or perhaps a reinforced area?

So the Jeep name on the tailgate then? I see they have aftermarket ones that are plain as well. Did some year CJ's come from the factory with no name?

Lots of old threads and pictures to look at -
    site:earlycj5.com rear seat - Bing
    site:earlycj5.com tailgates - Search

Nominally you could put any year CJ-5 rear seat in, if you got all the brackets and parts. AFAIK a '69 got the same seat type as the intermediates through 1975. I expect you could use a later seat too, but the mounting will change and you would have to figure that out.

My replies were intentionally brief; suggest you investigate these questions on your own. The site is both an interactive forum and a research resource. Suggest you study some of the old threads, learn, and ask more focused questions.

As far as back seat. The aftermarket low back fold and tumble seats come with all of the mounting brackets. Put one in our '71 and works great. I will most likely put one in the '67 as well.

No Jeep name on the tailgate, just blank for 1969. When they dropped the Willys name it was a blank block until the Jeep name showed up in 1971 (As I understand it). Here's the original tailgate on my '69:

I agree with Roy on the tailgate...no stamping of any kind. There is a time period between willys and jeep stamping where there is nothing. But, I not sure about the 4wheeldrive painted stencil on the lower right is appropriate for the era? Seems that may have ended with the change from willys to kaiser?

Both of my Jeeps still have the factory paint. The '69 has the "4 wheel Drive" logo and the '71 does not. The '71:

Not having access to a 70 with original paint, I would guess thy dropped the "4 Wheel Drive" logo when the tailgate changed in 1971.

I have a 69 cj 5 Canadian model with the v6 and no Jeep on the tailgate , as far as I know nothing is different that I have worked on and I’ve been through everything on mine in the restore. I got brackets and a seat from a 67 and they fit just fine. I’ll be glad to answer any questions you have. It may save you some time from “studying” old threads and get you more time to wrench on the old cj

My late '70 tailgate looks like this. It's been repainted, so I can't be sure there wasn't a stencil, but the center is spelled J-e-e-p.

Interesting. I wonder if that was a mid-year change in 1970? I know I've seen some original looking 1970 Jeeps with the blank tailgate.

Thanks for the offer, I appreciate, and will take you up on that.

I know from other vehicle forums I belong to, newbies are often asking the same questions that have been asked/answered, numerous times before. Fortunately, even the long term members, for the most part, are very patient, and will still offer help. It's more of a hobby, and social interaction with others, than a job.
I have done searches, as suggested by Timgr., but have been stumped more than once when the pictures are no longer available, or the links posted, no longer work.
    For example..Winshield frame differences???

For what its worth my 67 is original paint and has blank tailgate and stencil 4wheel logo. No back seat so about 10 years ago i found an old Confer style rear seat that bolts to the fender wells and has the storage box under the seat. Fold down back. Works great. Most standard rear jeep seats will fit if you install the brackets.

Some variances with the tailgates over the years it would seem. Peter mentions his 1967 doesn't have a name either.. I understand now that there were also two, maybe even three, different stencils used over the years. Fireball's is very similar to one stencil being sold, listed as from 1954 thru 1975, but the Jeep part of his stencil is missing.
    Stencils available for sale..Stencils

So, in conclusion... some tailgates had the Jeep name, or, had the 4WD stenciled on, while others had both, or one, or the other, or none at all. Simple right? o_O
I can't go to far wrong.. as long as it doesn't say Willy's, (which, go figure, is one I actually liked best..lol )

Durangotang's beautiful picture of his Willy's rear tailgate with stencil.
