Any ideas on what to use to keep the hood up, like the rod most cars have? I plan to fabricate one but if there is a donor from which I can "copy and paste" that would be great. Thanks!

Originally there is/was a spring loaded latch on the windshield at the top, in the center. The hood has a corresponding squarish loop that the latch catches on and holds the hood up.

My early '69 still has the latch while my '71 with the large glass windshield has a prop rod from the factory. I'm guessing it's because there is no longer room for the latch with the new windshield.

All that said, I usually gently lean the hood against the windshield on both jeeps and never use the latch or rod.

You can lean the hood back against the windshield in the garage, but I'd be careful outdoors. One gust of wind and it will come down.

The prop rod works great - the rod and retainer and clip are available aftermarket.

There is a socket to hold the end of the prop rod with the hood up that I believe is a 973857. I don't find any source for that.

This is a little different from the original, but should work Hood prop rod grill rest You could make one rather easily.

I've never experienced anything close to that. Has anyone here?

The visor on the Kelly hardtop sticks out several inches so the hood can't lean back far enough to latch. Thus I had a few times I was a bit concerned. :)

Sort of. Never came down, but it moved. I expect it would.

Also seems likely that's why it's a latch and not a bumper on the earlier models.

Just depends on the weather and slope you are parked on.
I've got a hardtop with the visor so it never could latch so the latch is reused to keep the rear hatch open. typically you aren't under the hood when it is windy without significant reason. It was a bigger issue for me on the farm in the Appalachians.

Not really worth an injury if avoidable. It's a big panel and it'll knock you down if it gets you.

On second thought, maybe survivorship bias would skew the answers to this. o_O

No, but I'm aware of the wind direction when I have the hood all the way up outside of the garage.

Are there teeth on the inside front lip of the hood? Willys part number?

I don't think I have ever had concern that either a flat fender or CJ 5/6 hood was going to try to eat me but that comes with a little common sense. I have had much more concern about them opening on their own accord while driving down the highway. It's somewhat disconcerting to watch the springs on the latches compress.

I put a towel on my windshield and lay the hood back on it, never had any thing to think about.

Heres my prop rod. Works great. Its about 30" long and clips into the old wire clips to stow it.

The finish of the rod and the clip suggest to me that it came from another vehicle. The bracket seems home-made.

I'm sure there are lots of vehicles in the yards that use a prop rod. My '95 VW has one, for example.
