I bit the bullet and started pulling the front cover I was just about there I just have to take a hamburger break. The one thing I did find is that it has over 10 degrees of play in the chain anything over 7 degrees is bad also the tach bounced at Idle it might be just the Autometer Tac. One thing it did not do was bouncing with the timing light. So Out I go downing my hamburger and hoping for no broken bolts. If any of you guys have any recommendations on chain gears dampers please let me know.

Well, it torn down, and the chain has stretched the dampers, and the lower pulley has some grooves in them. I think the chain was rattling around. That was my noise

Yeah, it's the chain smacking into the guide that makes the noise. When I bought it, my '69 clattered so much it sounded like a diesel at idle. It drove me nuts until I changed the chain and guide.

As for replacement parts, avoid getting a phenolic upper gear and go with a solid metal one. The choice of roller style or silent chain probably doesn't matter much for these engines.

The sad part is it was making that noise along, But when I put the HEI in it is when I notice it. It's been in the family since new and I had it 21 years and put about 100 miles on it if that. Since I retired this is going to be my last restoration I will do. I started up front and working my way to the back. I kinda hard to show it off when an idle is sounds terrible. I should found it sooner but working on brand new stuff (GMC junk) I guess I losing my edge. Thank again for the advice, you did good.

It's a bad photo but mine looked just like yours. New timing chain/guide and it's silent. Sooo much better:

I was thinking about a Distributor drive gear but I can not seem to find one online. There is a little wear not bad I could live without.

That cam gear is all metal which is an indication that it has probably been replaced once before.
Mileage on the clock may not be correct as you think.

I'm sorry I took the chain guide off to inspect. So from the factory, it had nylon gear?

My fuel pump eccentric was worn badly. I didn’t find a few places to source them if you need one “best offer buick counts”was the seller on eBay.

My FC with an odd fire 231 makes very similar noises at idle.

I worked really hard to verify the noise; I hope it will help other people with 225 motors. The best test was old-school rotate the crankshaft. If it travels more than seven degrees+ most likely, it's a stretched chain. The sad part is I did this for a living for 43 years as a GM tech. That you guys for all the help.

Here the sad part is what it looks like before I had to pull the front cover. I guess I could paint the front of the engine and do a better job. The new front is no longer a rope seal there is a

Thanks, Fireball it is a little hard to have a nice-looking engine and rattles like a diesel. Especially being a mechanic. Of all three jeeps, what is your favorite, and is the V8 better driving than the V6. I like that red but my wife wants to keep its original color. I would paint Kubota orange like my tractor if I could.

The go-to driver is the V8 Jeep. The Buick 350 isn't a high horsepower engine so it's not super fast but is has *tons* of low end torque and you can lug it down to 300 rpm. With the 3.73 gears, once it's moving you never need to shift. It will do 10mph all the way to 70mph (or more) in 3rd. It also has Saginaw steering vs the Ross steering on the '69 so it's much more pleasant and the highway.

All that said, the v6 Jeep is a ton of fun too. In fact , I was planning to swap a V6 back into the '71 when I got it. After doing some basic maintenance on the V8 to get it running and cooling better while I built a V6, I fell in love with the V8. Now it stays.

I hope you have other cars besides jeeps I could not imagine just driving jeeps any distance even one that was even late-model ones. Since I started restoring it. It has all new shocks and stabilizer shock. I put Bridgestones tires on it with new 8 inch wheels it made a big difference. Does the Saginaw steering make a difference in changing to the Ross? When we first got it had home it had reverse wheels welded together with bias-ply tires for driving on the beach, what amazing there is no rust anywhere. I drove to 30 miles to smog it back in the day my wife uncle owns it. It was one of the scariest rides I drove it would get a death wobble and wander all over the place. So here we are today it will be better than new. I want to buy a new car but not GM I know them. I have a 1999 Tahoe/ 2002 Regal/1993 four-wheel-drive Silverado and it's bulletproof. It's nice to have a person that is knowledgeable about jeeps. Even working in a dealership your knowledge is only good for tens years because we won't see 70s 80s some 90s. In the old days, repaired cars did not just replace components.

Yeah we have a 05 Xterra and a 06 F-250 that are the normal drivers. That said the whole family (wife and 2 dogs) go for 30+ mile pleasure rides in the Jeep more days a week than not. In fact I took took the '71 grocery shopping last night. That's an hour round trip. We're lucky to have lots of gravel roads to putt around on so the speeds are usually 45 or less. Highway stints are limited but fine when necessary.

A rebuilt Ross steering system will drive fine on the highway, but there are so many moving parts they don't stay well rebuilt for long. The Saginaw or Ford setups are so much simpler and m ore durable. Power steering is nice when offroading but doesn't matter as much on the street. The biggest thing to help road manners is setting you caster to 5-6 degrees with shims. You can see the process here on one of my build threads: Old Red Maintenance Thread. It TRANSFORMED the Jeep. Prior to the shims it was a white knuckle drive at 40 mph, now it heads straight down the highway at 60 with no other changes.

My biggest complaint with the '71 is the BDS 2.5" lift springs. The consensus on the forum is they are the best riding bolt-in springs but they are still to rough for my taste on our frost-heaved roads. Doing a YJ spring conversion is popular and I may end up doing that. Really with the springs a little softer I could drive it for hours at 60+mph and be comfortable.

I went back where you posted and looked a lot at your jeep's Pictures. I look like you take on some hard jobs in the jeep hobbies world you have going on, I don't have the energy to tackle those projects. I'm sorry but the dogs steal the show I am glad to see they get to go with you. Also, that's some beautiful county your putting around in. I have Guadalupe beach in my backyard, also but I have not been down there in years I can hear them from my house because I only live about three miles from the ocean. I had my fill of the beach back in the 70s and 80s otherwise there were just many crazies running around. Us Old guys sure have a lot of life experiences. Compare to the younger kids today you don't want them to work on your vehicles. it's scary. When you cut your head on that cotter key that must have hurt. I got one better I ran into a 1975 Cadillac exhaust tip when it was on the rack and gave myself a tattoo you can hardly see it but it's still there. Did you see a post about removing the rope seal? Have you ever modified the cover for a rubber seal?
