Not sure, I have a meeting coming up with a family member of the last one to own it before the farm, hoping they have some specific info on the owner prior to them.

It's my personal opinion (and shared by many here) that the Dauntless is the best engine ever put in a Jeep from the factory. Compact, light weight, makes plenty of power, and will lug down to 300rpm without dying.

Congrats on the sweet Jeep. It really looks good.

I had saved the link, then lost it, and then forgot to watch this auction. What was the final price, if you don’t mind sharing?

I believe it! As I said, I've hoped to find a clean and original one for years and am stoked to have this one.

This is a good story and I'm glad to tell it. Those who haven't ever been involved in an online auction like this might be interested in knowing how things went.

The bidding for this auction lasted for a week. The auction site was about 15 minutes away from my house, so I’d had a chance to go up and look this old Jeep over good. I knew what it was and knew it was the one I’d been hoping for years to find.

I also knew that several local restoration shops were watching it and might be bidding for themselves or their clients, so I expected it to go high. Most times, not always, the extra cost of shipping limits the number of outside bidders, so it tends to be a regional affair.

The bidding crawled along for the first 6 days and 20-some hours. It’d been stuck at $27 for days. I didn’t place a bid until there was about 2 hours left. With 2 minutes and 26 seconds left in the regular auction time there had been 19 total bids placed and the price went to $34. In the next minute and half 10 more bids were entered and the price went to $47. The next bid pushed the auction into “extended time”, each new bid extended the original auction time by 40 seconds. Things moved pretty quickly after that, so I quit logging bids and just focused on my bidding. When the dust settled about 5 minutes later the last bid was placed and the high bidder, me, got ready to bring this nice old Jeep home.

So, in the last 10 minutes of the auction the price went from $27 to the final bid of $65, and that’s what I paid for it. That might sound high to some, but, IMHO, it’s worth every cent. I’ve passed up some high priced junk over the years, and I believe that the work I won’t have to do on this one is more than worth the price of admission. Plus, it’s one of the most complete, unmolested and original old Jeeps I’ve ever seen. I intend to do nothing more than clean it up a bit, put in some different seats, put on some new tires, add a bikini top and otherwise leave it just the way it is.

A footnote here: the way I bid isn’t the way some do it. In almost all online auctions these days, a bidder can enter a maximum bid and then just sit back and let the software do the bidding for them. That seems like shooting fish in a barrel. I enjoy the whole bidding process, so I do it the old fashioned way. Lots more fun!

I'm assuming by $65, you mean $6500? If so, that seems like a pretty decent deal. If you actually mean $65,000, that's a bit more than I'd pay for a jeep, but it's a nice one.

Now if you really did mean $65, then you stole it!!!

Sorry for the confusion on the price, just using my own form of shorthand, yes, the price was $6500. As you can probably tell from my auction description, I'm pretty excited about this one. A highlight of my Jeep obsession. We own several "well worn" old Jeeps, but finally getting to add a mostly unmolested original to the bunch is pretty cool IMHO.

You did well! I'm excited for ya! My jeep is a Frankenstein '57/'70 combo. It's not on the road yet but I love looking at it every day when I walk by it!

Thanks. Yup, we like those FrankenJeeps. Here's one of ours, we call it Rancher, found it up in Montana, story was that it came off a ranch up there. 2A "custom" body on a 3A frame with a radiator that's a bit too large so they shimmed the grill up and put a small crown in the hood.
