I'm in the process of developing a new way to restore the 1963-'71 heater control panel faceplates that will very closely replicate their original appearance, including the white artwork, and would like to buy some to experiment with.

If anyone has one or more that they don't need, or for that matter the entire heater control assemblies, please let me know. It's okay if they have some rust, as long as they aren't extremely pitted or rusted through.

    Thanks very much!

55-62 were not the same as 63-71. They were pull knobs compared to vacuum and the control panel had no art work. I have a couple for sale and am restoring a 71 Renegade II. It would be interesting seeing what you are doing.

Thanks for straightening me out on that, I'd (obviously) thought they were the same all the way back to '55.

Will p.m. you re. what you have for sale.

I bought a decal from a guy on ebay...haven't used it yet but it looks like it'll work very nicely. Black decal with the white letters.

Yeah I did the same thing about a year ago, and it definitely seemed like the best solution at the time. I noticed that after awhile, the corners of mine started to peel back a bit, and I was going to just re-glue them down. But I also noticed at some point that the artwork on the decal wasn't particularly accurate when compared to the original.

Here's a photo of my decal from eBay above an original heater control faceplate:

You can see that while the font that was used on the decal is fairly similar to that on the original, it's not exactly the same font, nor is the arrowhead at the end of the "Temp" arrow the same.

I'm working on a new method that will exactly replicate the original artwork - but instead of printing it on a decal, this method will allow the white artwork to be applied directly to the black-painted faceplates, making them look just like the originals did.

I realize that not everyone cares about or even notices that level of detail - and of course that's fine - I'm just doing this for those like me who do.

Well boy howdy!!!! Count me in. If whatever you are doing turns out half as good as of your other decals, then you are going to make some people very happy ****me me me me first please!!!**** I for one as you know, would give up my first born for the historically accurate work you have been churning out for my museum restoration. And as someone that is exactly like you and absolutely notices these tiniest of details, I cannot wait to see what you come up with!

I am tempted to take you up on that, and trade your firstborn for said historically accurate decals, then the child could be an indentured servant whose task would be restoring old Jeeps.

And of course you'd be more than welcome to come visit and help him or her with their work, Eric! ;)

I love it Maury. The heater face plate has been a topic for many years for how to restore to original. :)

I guess the originals were screen printed or stenciled? I too have used the available decals, and they have worked OK with a heat gun for the corners, but its still too much of a corner for the vinyl to completely conform.
Though not perfectly accurate, I've settled on the decal as acceptable.
Maury, I'll take better when you succeed at this task!

LOL....and the answer is a definitive NO. One of my close friends is a retired very senior US Secret Service agent, and believe me, I would never want to be in trouble with either his former agency or with him! (Amazing person....here's an article about him in case anyone's interested: The Detail - Georgia State University News - )

I have one on a 67 dash board that I was probably going to toss. It is rusty and dirty but I haven't paid enough attention to it to know how bad. I will be using the dash board in the 67 I am working on now.

I will take it off today and see whether it is worth cleaning up, and post a picture if it is.

If it turns out to be something you can use all it will cost is postage.

Yeah thanks - OldPappy is correct. I'm not sure what that knob is from, but it wasn't stock on the ECJ5's.
