My first trip to the Rubicon was during Rubithon, a long time ago. Anyway someone was going through camp at Rubicon Springs in the middle of the night and siphoning gas out of Jerry cans. I think today that would be grand theft.

I'm figured since Jerry cans walk off to easy i'ld add a passenger under seat tank, rear tank, saddle tanks, then a bulk tank, pump and meter.
Also gotta bring the measuring tape. As get regular if it's just a show.

I know. You are correct. I have been pushing the edge for too long. On Jamboree, I take a trailer to the springs the weekend before with tents, gas, beer etc and leave it. Then go out and around the long way. But they are cracking down on the no trailer rule, so it may not be an option any more. I have been mostly saved in the past on the fuel issue because I'm the one in the group with the welder, they don't let me too far out of sight.

In all my years (this will be my 30th Jamboree) I have not heard of that happening. Worst theft I've ever had was a bear stealing cheetos while we were swimming, and a 16 year old kid that was nabbing beers out of the cooler when he thought we were too drunk to notice.

Alright, don't laugh, but I am going to give this a try for the tail light panels. I bought some Sierra Blue in a rattle can, and got some 2K clear from Summit. The clear has a pod of hardener in the bottom that you push in when ready to paint.
Pleasantly surprised at how well this went. Sprayed nice, I put 3 coats on about 10 minutes apart. This used about 1/2 the can.
After that, I put on 3 coats of the 2K clear. I think this looks pretty good, for this jeep, and for the price-about $50.
Sam donated this long-travel front drive shaft, off a retired jeep. With the front shackle reversal, long travel, with a tractor spline is a must.
After some clean up, I noticed some rock rash, bordering on failure. Man, he told me this thing was only driven to church!
That's alright, I'll get this to our driveline guy in Carson City next week for a tune-up. Side by side the difference, old to new, is striking.

Now that painting is done for now, against better judgement, (because I'm about to do a major welding job here),I mounted the tail lights. These are the Walcks units, and look nice.
More gathering of material for the swing out tire rack. I was at a job last week when a PDM Steel truck pulled in, and after a little inquiry, I had a 20' stick of 1-1/2" 3/16" wall box tubing delivered the next day for a very reasonable price (compared to what I'm paying full retail at the local welding shop). Gotta enjoy the little scores. Also dug around and found a serviceable tire mount, easily from the 60's, so it fits well here.
The Ruffstuff spindle arrived, and this thing does not disappoint. 1-1/2" shaft, nicely machined for tapered roller bearings, and a 2-1/4" sleeve to weld the carrier to. I started playing around with layout and how to make this hell for stout.
The shaft just slides in a piece of 2" box, so this will be how I surface mount it on the crossmember, along with a bunch of strategic boxing and bracing.

I used the same kit. Very happy with the result.

Scott, so I have a few questions. I see the angled latch, and am planning on something similar. Are you happy with the latch, and the clamping force? And once you put some weight on it, is the tire pretty firm up top with just the clamp at the bottom?

It all seems to be very secure. I have not been off-road (or even onroad) yet but I have had a 33 on there and shook it hard as I could. It’s not moving. The clamp forces against a small steel tab welded to the bumper and a piece of thin plastic cutting board between. I used a couple pieces of the cutting board to shim up the carrier when I welded it to the swiveling part. Now that I m thinking about it I used 2 pieces thick on the clamp end and one piece on the swivel end making the clamp end less than 1/4” higher. With the weight of the carrier with the tire that gap drops slightly and the angled clamp easily closes the rest.

Both tire carriers I have built are this way. You will want to build a solid capture point for the lower cross bar.
This is what I built for my Uncles's YJ. We used the 2000lb latch from McMaster Carr.

Thanks guys for the great detail and description. I have ordered the clamp, and am working on the hinge and frame. I would love to post my progress, but all of a sudden I can't get photos to load on the hosting site I use, (the G503 album). I might be switching sites, I don't know, I hate crap like this.

I can load photos with my phone, so the issue must be in my mac. Anyway, started with cutting some 1/4" plate for the bumper mount.
The first dummy-up of where it will have to go. The point of this is to be able to open the tailgate, so it will hang down below the crossmember, but not lower than the exhaust or pintle, so it might get touched on the steepest of vertical drop offs. I rarely hit my pintle in the 3B, (that one big drop off the slabs above Buck Island Lake), so I think this will be OK.
Notched the 1-1/2" box for the bearing housing.
Worked on some Coors Aided Design to make sure this thing is not going to move.
Got the spare mounted, I did not spring for a beadlock for this. Just a 17x9 steelie I got from Summit. It is heavy, so this rack needs to be stout.

I have a small interference with the pintle, so I am going to raise the center section of the lower frame.
This will allow for opening the pintle with the rack closed. (kind of important).
Added some strength plating top and bottom.
Welded the lower frame to the bearing housing and added a gusset.

This spring loaded pull pin is what will keep the rack safely open. I made a tab and played with where to mount.
Right about here is about the only option.
Put a mating tab on the frame side. I think this will work.
Now that everything at the hinge is tacked, I took it out for welding on the table. The shaft that hangs out the bottom will get trimmed.
And now the twist. This is how I will accomplish the "in and down" clamping force, thankfully pioneered by others on here.
For a little beef, I found a chunk of Wagoneer tie rod that fits pretty well inside, and drilled for some plug welds.
Turning to the latch side, I started building the 45 degree rest. I drilled and welded a captive nut so I can bolt the rack in lieu of the clamp (which has not arrived).
This is how it sits, and the bolt might be nice if the clamp ever fails.
A lot of welding to do, but it's ready to go vertical next.

Did you look at mounting the spring loaded pin on the fixed vehicle and put the hole on the swinging section? I was thinking that would be a little more compact and easier on the shins.

I played around with all sorts of positions. In the end, I thought it would be easier to pull up on the pin, rather than down, (if it were on the fixed side). The handle is 35" off the floor right now, so I think it's tucked up pretty well out of the way.

Started adding on for the tire mount.
Flat on the table is so much easier for keeping it square.
I am using an original spare tire block, and it gets spaced out enough for the 12.50 tire.
Now I turn to the can mount. I will only get one can on here (hell, it's heavy enough). It will go on the drivers side, as I can't put one on the other side because it would hit the body when the rack swings open.
This plate sticking out will grab the can holder. I will beef it up as necessary.

I decided to give this a support to the roll cage. The 45 degree tubing return will pass through the lower part of the back flap zipper if the top is on.
Boxed and final welded the hinge mount.
Mounted the rack back on, tightened the hinge bearings, then hoisted the tire up there. Then the can mount, and of course I had to see how a can sits. I still need to work on a tie down for the can. Also found a spot up and out of the way for the plate. If you look closely, you can see a 1965 registration sticker.
