Oddfire Distributor Cap

I got a NOS Buick HEI Oddfire Distributor. After looking at the distributor cap I understand the spacing. I just got a distributor cap for the Delco distributor that is in the Jeep now. A Napa RR 189 which was specified on the site as being the right cap. The terminals on the Napa cap are evenly spaced out on the cap. The HEI cap have spaces where the 2 cylinders are not used. How does this effect the performance of the engine using the cap where everything is evenly spaced. Was a cap ever made with the right spacing for the Delco Distributor. Need to get the Jeep running and licensed now and will put the HEI in this winter.

 

I have a ‘70 with the round cap on the bottom and a spare unknown year supposedly oddfire with the same round cap. I tore down the unknown engine and found if I can remember the #6 pushrods bent. I’m wondering if the question above is the reason for the bent rods or it maybe has been over sped. From my knowledge the engine in the ‘70 is stock but with a round distributer. Hopefully someone can answer both our questions.

 

Take a look at the underside of the HEI cap and the answer will be clear. Te terminals are extra long to contact the rotor at the right time.

That's normal. The rotor is what's unique, it should have a tail on the outer terminal about 3/4" long. One other thing that is unique on an odd fire V6 is the cam that runs the points, the cam lobes are not equal. Be sure the wires are where they should be according to the book and you'll be ok. If your distributor is off a tooth or 2 off, you can't just move the wires around like you could on a V8 or even fire V6. BTW, if any members of you Jeep community is interested, I have 2 complete even fire carburated turbo 6 engines, non electronic. Just add 12V and fuel and the make 210 HP.
