I have an upright winch I'd like to put on my 63 willys shortly. I believe it's either a warn or a Bellevue which I think are actually the same and I think its rated at 6k lbs. It's only power in and has a large band style brake operated by a cable from inside

Question is how or what type of switch do I need to use this winch? Very close to the winch about 2 feet away there is a old looking switch that's a bar you push down or squeeze to turn it on. What's the best way to operate this thing? I was thinking a solenoid on the fender operated by a momentary push button on the dash but what do you guys think?

I may even look into making this thing power in and out if that's possible

Yes they are the same, or similar. Warn ultimately rebadged the winch as the M8000. These are antiquated yet strong, fast and reliable. Herm has parts for them, and original controls are still available.

    However, As you suggested...
-I have mine wired into the dash through a toggle switch that then feeds a push button momentary switch. I wired dual continuous duty 500amp solenoids that power the winch off a dual battery set-up (2/0 awg cables).
-For the brake, I used a heavy duty cable puller found thru NAPA, installed into the dash.
-The dual solenoids are a safety measure in the event that one welds itself closed...the system can still be shut down at the toggle switch.

Lastly, a corded remote can be wired in with a simple remote starter switch and a HD type male/female plug-in.

Forgot to mention that there have been some neat mods done with these. I think it was member Duffer that engineered a disk brake. And apparently there is a way to get power out with a Ramsey motor retrofit. For me though, at that point I’d just get an Warn 8274.
