Decided to upgrade to the HEI. Did the mods so it would fit. Engine #1 cylinder in TDC compression position. HEI dropped in with #1 on the cap and rotor matched. Vacuum adv pointed to front of engine. HEI dropped right in same position as the old Delco. I can get it to start but only fires on 2-4-6 cylinders. Have moved the dist. one tooth both ways doesn't seem to help. Have seen where odd fires only fire on one bank but can't seem to find it again. Ran fine on the Delco dist.

I think everything is installed right, went over all info I could find. Still dead on 1-3-5 cylinders, no spark. Going to install a new module in the AM>

This is a super slick foolproof way to find tdc.

Thought of that, pulled the dist. and turned 180 degrees. Just backfired thru the carb.

Does the distributor have a good ground?

Pulled the dist. out and took it apart. Noticed the pick up tangs on the shaft had been filed/ground down. One tang even touches the pick up tang in the dist. Would this cause the problem?
I believe the ground is good, but will put a ground wire on the housing when reinstalled.

Not supposed to touch. The iron spikes on the shaft are called the reluctor. There is a current flowing through the pickup coil, making a small local magnetic field focused at the iron points of the pickup. When the pair of iron points come near and pass, the iron changes the field characteristics which causes a voltage change across the pickup coil. This is detected as a trigger signal by the control module.

The reluctor needs to be centered so all the trigger signals are the same. Not sure if this is enough to goof up the module triggering - maybe - but it's not right regardless.

Whose distributor is this? Reman or new production? I'd want a different one.

Bought it used, but the guy promised it was good :sneak:.
I filed the contact point down so it didn't touch and re-installed. Ran a little better with #3 now firing.
Still running bad, had enough for now and put the Delco back in and it runs great.
I'll probably order a rebuilt HEI and try again.
