But it's absolute fact that some of those tree dwelling primates do make tools.

I grew up with a father that apparently had some adverse affliction when it came to acquiring tools. Yes, you can usually do jobs with makeshift tools but you can do them better and much quicker with the right ones. I've never been shy about picking up what I need. Preferably quality used stuff-except for power tools.

I have no idea how many tools I have but there are 8 roller cabinets/intermediate/chests in the garage and 5 more units in the shop.

I was doing pretty good until Harvey hit us~ I would like to have a box just for metric and one for standard, and still despite Allen wrenches! I'm kind of caught up on projects, I just need to organize, organzie, organize! ;) But I am proud of my garage and what I have accomplished tool wise and still working on, just worry about what happens when I die with what I do have; my kids could care less about my tools:(

Harvey didn't stop here, it went 6', well above my box for two weeks in my garage:( I still have tools I haven't gotten to yet to make useable:(

I did manage to get my AC recycling machine high enough to preserve the circuit boards, just had to replace a cooling fan, darn thing still works! That's my moms 26hp Lawntractor I just had got running, polished it up and ready to give back to her, and my 175 amp mig, darn thing still works! lol

I had this in my parents house long ago, 1m of Seine river in the garage. Unpleasant.
They throw away my books and souvenirs of my student life, all wet rotten.
Then my eyes were wet too...

I spent my young life near the river Seine, father and grad father liked fishing.
the first house, week end house, was under water in 1955 aound, the big flooding.
Then my father bought a house not far but 1982 flooding, few water in the house but we had a garage and shop a little bit nearer the river, and 1meter inside with my books, all my things of the past.
I said never a house near a river.
I bought my country house far from river, I live here now.
    it is an old farm.
Old farms were near the water point...Farmers around changed the ditch system which collects water, rain from fields.
They destroy this net to fill it and get more land, that was government land reorganisation.
They put pipes instead but...if big rain, the water comes here low point.
I added new pipes to get this water further, avoiding the house.
    We need water, but outside!
Next house on a hill ....

I've been flooded out before, but only 24" deep in the shop. Big difference for me is it was salt water. That destroys stuff so much more than fresh water, especially anything electric.

I don't want to take over this thread, wasn't my intention, but in a short answer, re-restoration of my '67 Mustang and half resto on my 73 triumph Tr6, but our home was the worst of it all, but wound up with a much nicer place away from the city, less likely to flood here at our new property. The experience was horrible, but I love our new place, especially my garage!!;)

I just love our new place, and my "woman" cave!! and always seeking to improve my tool collection:bananatool:

I purged before moving to FL and I still had one entire 20' container packed solid floor to ceiling with just tools.. And that didn't include the lathe..

we have enough to fill up our toolboxes to the point that we need more storage, then there'd only be some tools in there, so i'd have to fill up the new toolboxes...

I have a rule about tools. If I can work around the need for a new tool, I will.... Twice.
Until the 3rd time I say "I could really a ...", then I will buy it.

I've got a lot, but nothing compared to what I've seen on here.

    Yer doin' it wrong.

Buy a tool, then make three attempts to discover a use for it!

Truly. I am always experimenting with ways to adapt and improvise unlikely tools to new purposes in my craft. Surprising how often it works out.

When I started working in a shop 40 years ago I was told it if needed to borrow it more than 3X’s I needed to buy my own!

I really hate borrowing tools of any kind. I know a lot of people who have saved a bunch of money through the years by borrowing this or that instead of buying or renting what they needed. I'm not much for renting either and I'm usually up against the wall when I resort to this. I just feel that, with my luck, I'll break or damage the tool I borrowed and I'll end up buying one anyhow. It's happened before. It sucks. I try to avoid it.

I don't borrow anything either. That ends up costing you a lot of time. If I need something I buy it. Used if possible.

Borrowing tools needs a lot of trust and a friend that scratches your back the way you scratch theirs. I used to borrow a friends tractor a lot. Always cleaned it and filled the diesel tank back up, if I broke something I fixed it. He did the same when he borrowed something of mine. I have 3-4 friends that I do this with, saves a lot of money and time.
