New Hei Distributor

Performance Distributors now makes an HEI D.U.I. system that actually fits. I had bought the old, short one that required you to grind half your engine off to make fit. This one is an inch taller and it makes all the difference.

It's kinda expensive, the MSD box is a much cheaper alternative, but it's super easy to install now and works great.

Did you need the "plastic shims" which one of the reviewers was complaining about? If so, can you post a link?

 

I can't think of how they apply when your distributor is installed in the timing cover. As I understand it they are for when the deck height has been changed.

 

I wonder if this is a custom made housing and extended drive or if it is a different application that has been modified to fit the Buick?
D.U.I makes a good product, we ran them in all of our race cars, but there's no advantage to a high end ignition system under 5,000-5,500 rpm. Tons of magazine articles to prove that.
Better be a well built dauntless if you expect it to sing 5K plus for long enough to feel the HP loss of a stock HEI.......

 

I saw this the other day when I was looking at hei distributors. Norcal, is there a better (i.e cheaper) option that you would recommend? Other than this long neck DUI distributor, they all seem to be around the same price at 200ish bucks. Am I looking in the wrong place?

 

A stock buick V6 from '75? The parts are available on Rockauto for a '75 Skylark.

 

That DUI is a nice piece but $450 is just too spendy for an HEI distributor IMO.

 

It appears to be a custom made piece. It's the second most expensive single thing I've bought for my Jeep, the short block was $500, but I think it will last the remaining 20 years I have on this planet without any trouble.

 

I feel that the price is steep, but the thought that its one off piece changes my feeling on that. I was thinking, how hard could it be to make one of these? Get the HEI body and just make a new one out of aluminum, but longer with a longer shaft. If you have a lathe, it wouldn't be too bad.. Maybe even fun.

 

Does it work with an oddfire? I didn't see it mentioned on summits site. What about plug wires? Do the stock wires work or would i need hei specific wires?
