Where should I start to inspect for damage on a 19 spline dana 44?

My 1960 seems to have a tight rear end. I suspect backing over some snowplow parts in the garage then pulling forward then back then locking the front hubs and dancing around in 4 low on concrete with a rear wheel bound up wasn't good for it.
That or flat towing 200miles without oil.
Visually the pinion seal is leaking about a 4" puddle in less than a week and I can't push it around on the level driveway anymore.

Pull the differential cover off, jack it up, and turn by hand ?

Unless you have a bearing seized either on the axles or in the diff, I'd suspect the brakes as well. As noted, jack it up, drop the diff cover, and see it it'll turn by hand. If neither side turns, it's probably a differential problem. If one side turns and one doesn't, start on the locked up side, pull the brakes off and see if it'll turn. If so, you know, if not, you'll have to pull the axle shaft and see what condition the axle bearings are in. If they are good, it'll be something in the differential and you will have to pull it apart.

    Hope this helps.

I'd be betting on a seized bearing.

Depending on the pinion seal you have ,my 61' with Dana 44 has the dust shield on the rear yolk that covers the pinion seal and can get bent and will bind against the pinion seal and pinion will not turn. Don't ask how I know this!! Some pinion seals are flat across front and some have a raised area that will rub against dust cover, get flat original seals from Pete Debella Jeep parts. If leaking that needs replacing anyway, remove yolk and see if everything frees up. Hopefully nothing else is torn up, good luck!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he doesn't have to remove the diff cover. On my M170, which I have removed the diff cover, it's jacked up and if I turn either the left or right wheel not only can I see the gears in the diff turn, but the rear driveshaft will rotate as well. Wouldn't that tell him the gears are turning? In my case I can hear some dragging occurring in the driver's side drum, but I'm going to redo the brakes as well.
You guys have way more experience than I do so I may be all wrong. And it's a good idea to remove the cover anyway to inspect and change the oil.

Does this axle have a locker or limited slip in it?

Alrighty so I posted the video on friends of earlycj5.
I can't tell for sure but as commented on fb maybe the clunk is in the e-brake drum.
Passenger side moves super easy while the driver side chugs along merrily. I'll pull the cover, I doubt this has anything to do with wheel brakes.

Most likely omix ada shoes. But I'll take an easy $40 fix.

Joe, just a reminder, I learned this the hard way, when you put that drum back on, clean the spline real good, Brake Clean is what I like, and put at sealer on the spline when you put the Drum back on. I rebuilt my Transfer Case and didn't seal the spline as was suggested Here, and a short time later I had oil on the new parking brake shoes. Oil will work it's way through the spline and get on your new brakes. Good Luck.
