Today I removed the oil pan to replace the gasket before installing the V6 into the Jeep.

I Found these broken metal parts in oil pan, any idea what part of the engine its from, I'm guessing the oil rings falling apart but don't know how it made it into the pan. The engine was running well before I pulled it this is odd. IMG_3996.jpg

Any help would be appreciated IMG_3996[3264].jpg

Those do appear to be the backers for the oil rings, maybe one or two cylinders worth that made it to the pan. There may be more pieces still in the ring grooves. Either way, that can't be good. Is there any way these could have been in the pan from a previous issue? No pieces of the oil ring rails? It could be possible for these broken pieces to make their way out of the ring groove by working their way to the inside of the piston adjacent to the wrist pin.

    Donny,
Thanks for info, I did see a small piece stuck up inside the piston. This really was not planned I was hoping not to do a rebuild.

    Update

I pulled the heads off and took out the #3 piston because I found a piece of metal sticking into the inside of the piston when looking up thru the crank. It dose not look to be the oil expanders, yet its behind the oil expander ring set in the back of the oil ring grove, this is a little odd. I have not seen a flat ring behind oil expander and oil rings before. I think this was done to take up slack in a back yard rebuild or something?

The part that was sticking out from under the piston is one of the rails. Those were actually quality rings. You can see the chrome wear surface on the outer edge. That ring set was likely a "chrome molly" set. They take a bit longer to break in, but seal and wear much better in the long run.
I've seen expanders get out of postion and cause problems, but never the rails.
Does the ring groove look damaged or is it OK? Any scratches or grooves on the cylinder walls?
