Time for a quick update as I actually did something on the project today.

BUT FIRST - I have to ask if you guys face the same issues I do when it comes to 'people putting things in the shop/basement/garage'. It never fails that when I say it 'goes to the shop', or 'put it back in the shop when your done', the de facto standard is to just enter far enough to say 'you were in the shop' when you plop it on the floor. While I was 'not allowed' in the shop post surgeries - this is exactly what happened. I got 'someone' (promised the wife I wouldn't say who it was) to stop because I said "that tool is on the bench"... it took 'that person' almost an hour to get said drill because "a path had to be cleared to the bench from the door" back in March. When I got some help and was allowed back out, it took Sheldon and I almost two days to 'clear the floor' enough to get to the over head doors. As it is, I've not tackled the 'bench' yet... since that was the 'new place' to dump stuff so it wouldn't block the door.

    See said Bench

Anyhow - I dug the hood and tailgate out to get them ready for color. Hood is just going to take a bit of sanding for tooth, and some minor repairs to get it ready. Blaster wouldn't do hood as his equipment tends to warp them.

The tailgate was blasted clean and revealed some 'bondo' fixes that I've got to handle before paint.

Dug the gun and shook paint enough late this afternoon that I actually put color on the fenders, so they should be about done. The well has undercoating on it.

Yay - real work and progress on the project for a change :bananatool:

I'm the only one with the key to my little garage. My wife doesn't even mow the lawn and should she need to, it would be in my best interest to hire that out to someone with there own equipment.

OK - I've been puttering a bit - little at a time and between other 'honey due' items to get caught up on... Like fixing the washing machine :banghead:

Anyhow - some folks had pinged me on how I do some of the things so figured since I'm being slow I would take some more pics.

First - some key tools - I've collected enough air grinders over the years to keep setups on them - makes things a lot nicer to go back and forth with... for this phase:

Tailgate... Its got rusted out sections in the rollover for the bottom and hinge.

    Pin Holes

This is what happens when you 'fix it' but 'not really.

Its been beat, left wavy and they also didn't seal the lip at the bottom of the gate - nor did they leave a place for the water to run out. You can see the rust when I drilled to setup for spot welds:

Pin hole fixes - Slit the gate along all the 'thin metal'... front and back

I use 'curl strips' that I straighten from my shears for 'mig filler rod'...
Set it in and weld the seams - gives extra metal to help fill and I just grind it down.

Used the dolly's I got when we cleaned Granddad's shop out in June - nice solid metal - to flatten and smooth out all the dents in the tail gate.

Even had to fix the way they beat the roll on the sides and chain hookups.

In the end - I clamped and spot welded the bottom lip after cleaning the rust out - I'll body seam fill it at the finish.

Ground the welds down close to the 'profile' of the gate. If I was being perfect I would finish with some Lead or Liquid Metal as I don't like bondo there (or really anywhere on a wheeling rig). Good enough for the level I'm going on this - solid structure - good wheeling rig.

Got a couple little things to touch up on it then it gets primed and then on to the hood.

End of the month - time for an update. Not progressing as fast as I would want, but I'm fitting it in between catching up on the 'honey do' list that's been neglected for over a year.

And I figuring out I'm getting old - don't heal or recover as fast as I used to - still small steps out in the shop.

Anyhow - I started to take the hood down to bare metal - like I have for all the metal. While working the inside, I found lots of 'dimples' in the metal I was not expecting. It looks so good from the top. I also have a couple 'extra' holes I'm not sure fit with the Windshield. This had a "Venting" Windshield on the source.

So I filled the holes - messaged the metal back close with heat and water rags. Got it pretty good.

Started to work more of the top and found bondo - nice and thin - in more places than I expected. They did a good job of it IMOP. So I decided to fill and smooth it back out.

Oh - I also got a $60 lesson in 3M "Hookit" vs "Hookit II"... I had a mix of the papers given to me, but needed some 80 grit. Found a good price on Amazon and got a box... Damn - Hookit sanding disks, and I have a Hookit II base... Did you know the hooks and loops are OPPOSITE between them???? I didn't. :banghead:

Order a Hookit base and wait a week for it... but now I'm set for BOTH sets of disks. Can't complain too much - the DA and most of the rest were free :sneak:

Hood smoothed and ready for primer....

Got to do some quick touchups on the inside yet.

Here's the Windshield I'm putting on it.

Got the Grill and Tail Gate hung for some paint - just need to wait on weather and time.

Should I put the black accent on the hood... still thinking about that one.

Well, dang - I might have missed the paint window for the fall/early winter. Going to get a few days above 50 this week, but the nights are still deep in the 20s and I don't want to screw up what little painting I have yet to do. Also get to loose 6 weeks starting the first week of Dec for some more 'repairs' on me. Running out of things for the Dr to fix at this point.

Guess I'll just have to kick the remaining painting to spring now. Got plenty to do this winter any how. I need to get the winch built on the gooseneck so I can go to the farm and bring one tractor and the '95 GMC Diesel home and get them running again so that will be first after the 6 week healing.

Hoping to get some time this week to clean things up so I can get frame back inside. Then I can get the fab items polished off and the tub back on for the cage, steering and dash items next.

Can't get things lined around to work on the gooseneck yet, so have been puttering with the build.

Started to fit the rear tank in place.

Got an older skid plate I'm going to use on this. Will fill the notch in it later. Looks close, but will probably drop it a touch more and then figure the bolt points.

Tanks need to be able to be dropped on a floor jack with the skid plate. Makes servicing so much easier.

Then - the project is sold. Neighbor is buying it to add to the other rig so he and his brothers can play when they come to town.

First change - he wants a power setup. I made the cross member forward to set the grill on it. I'll refigure that and the radiator placement.

Time to clear out the crossmember I had in it. Have I mentioned how much I like my plasma? The extended reach attachment makes this stuff real easy too.

You have put in a ton of work on this. Sad to see it go. Are you going to finish it before the sale?

Yes, I'll finish it. He just gets to pick some of the things as they are done, so the "should I do it this way, or that" isn't my problem any more. I've built several over the years and sold them or for others. I built running gear and other parts (sans the tub work) for the one he has initially for him years ago in 6 weeks with the parts I had laying around. Since then he has done and learned a lot on it.

All in all - going to a good home and he has watched me build it so far, so he knows what he is getting. I do these for mental therapy now (shows how screwed up I really am I guess ) as I enjoy the different work from my job sitting at a desk.

I'm finally out far enough from the surgery to start to feel good about it. Believe me, there were times and I'm still fighting the right hip flexor they moved while screwing around in there. The last couple months I've made some good progress from the back and rotator cuff and the strength is coming back.

Can I send you mine next, lol? Seriously though, that's cool that you're letting the buyer in on the decision making process.

Well - got out and did a bit of work cleaning up the front crossmember area so I can move it and fit a power box.
Then I finished mounting the rear skid plate / frame for the rear tank.

Well - gonna be putting in some 'extra' time as much as I can so I can get this buttoned up.

Ortho Dr said Monday my right hip is bone on bone and starting to get some micro fractures - explains the pain I guess.

Doing a shot in a couple weeks to get me past our Europe Vacation I can't move - then third ortho surgery in three years late summer for a full hip replacement

Not sure which is cursed - trying to get the build done or my planning things. :susp:

Time for a bit of an update.

I redid the front crossmember as we are now going to put a power box on. My original didn't follow my 'normal' as we had put a custom box in there my niece wanted. Luckily, the mount uses the same bolt pattern as the normal Saginaw - I just needed to move the crossmember.

Rough set right now as I want to mate the drive train back in and position the radiator with everything before setting it in solid.

To that point - I spent the morning rolling everything in the front of the shop out so I could drop the frame and roll it up to the hoist and mount the drive train back in.

Then pushed it out the back door - roll the tub to the lift - pull the rotisserie its been on for a couple years and get it ready to mate back to the frame for fitting.

This is normally @ a 2 hr process - took almost 3 now that I'm down to one working leg and it kicked my A$$. Could barely walk and had to go to a cane to get around and some pain pills. Puts a real damper on getting anything done. I sure hope the shot in two weeks buys me some relief.

Surgery should be end of August - early September.
