I read/heard somewhere that factory reman./rebuilt F-heads wre painted blue. I do know the one I took out of the '67 CJ-5 that I parted out was a minty blue/green color. It was to be a swap motor for my '56 but ended up having a cracked deck. I took the bottom end out of it to replace the worn crank in my '56. It had undersize bearings on the crank and an .040 overbore. Was clean as a whistle inside, no sludge or goo anywhere,so I am assuming it was rebuilt at some point in its life. My '56 was originally black as almost all others I've seen. HTH

Hmm. Mines blue. Ser# on the firewall sez it's a '59. The PO said it was a '57. Probably some of both and more. Does blue really mean High Altitude? So it might have higher compression than the "sea level" version?

There were four different heads for the F head. These four heads had three compression ratios with the highest being for high altitudes.

That is per the parts manual.

I also understand that they were painted different colors to distinguish them; the high compression head was supposed to be yellow.

However, I have never seen this color coding in any Jeep document. But I haven't seen all the jeep documents either.

I read somewhere that the factory rebuild engines were painted blue.
