It is definitely to one side. Apparently That is the way Jeep did it in ‘74. I’m sure someone here knows about how/why it was built that way.

Is there anything weird that you have to do to make that work? Or just plug in a front yoke where the rear yoke goes?

Back today from a skiing trip and had a couple hours to spend on the Jeep. Need to make the transmission tunnel cover fit this bigger T18.

    Cut here...

The mounts for the TC shifter definitely need some more room...

This is the plan. Then I’ll also need to modify the small top cover as well.

    Transmission cover modifications.

    Chop, weld and hammer.

    Lots of test fitting.

    More chop, weld, hammer.

Now I just need a large (5”) shifter boot and a little bit more chopping.

Had trouble getting the parking brake cables to lock into the backing plates. Problem was the holes in the 50yo backing plates were worn out to large for the cable clips. I used a 1/2" washer that the cable clipped into perfectly to remake the mounting hole.

Today I ordered some new Bilstein shocks that I can mount with the tubes UP. This will keep the tubes from getting mangled by my Dana30 front brake calipers. $100 each!:censored:

If you move the shocks to the rear of the axle you wont have any interference issues.....
But hey..... I really enjoyed building shock mounts twice...... :sneak:

I won't make it. Still waiting on my title and I have to rewire and do more welding. I'm shooting for a certain date in June currently. :sneak:

Are your brake calipers hitting them?
    *******
I just looked back through your thread. I see now that you were still running the shocks that RR sends with the YJ spring kit. Steve received the same shocks with his kit. They are way too long for a spring under setup.
I realize that you just ordered new shocks.... but before you install them, let your front suspension sag to full droop and measure the eye to eye distance on your mounts. There is no reason for your shocks to be any longer than that full droop eye to eye length. Within reason of course..... shocks might be +1/2"....
Any extra length in your shocks is just stuff to get in the way.

I actually have the Rancho 7000 or 9000 that you (I think) suggested. They did perform very well but just to thick. I ordered and received the Bilstein shocks that I will get in there this week. The tube goes to the top with these so I should have no more trouble.

Tonight I put the transmission covers all together and put on the new shifter boot. My wife pumped and I bled brakes and clutch. I put the steering back together as well. It’s getting really close but I’m trying to take my time and get things right and tight.

Fresh coat of paint (bed liner) on the floors and covers. Ran out of paint before I got the last small cover done. I’ll hit that in the next couple day

Notice the transmission cover is extended back a bit? We had to cut out floor a bit to get the bigger transmission to slide straight onto the clutch/engine. Couple pics of all that mess here.

Added the new piece to the back of the transmission cover.

Reinstall gas pedal. Had a bit of work to do to get the fuel lines hooked up again. I might have done it backwards. I tried to start it but no fuel ever got up to the filter. Didn’t make it back out to the garage after dinner.

Since I had to move the fuse box Last night I extended the wire harness for the headlights. Also changed out the front shocks for Blistien shocks that have the main tube on top. The old big tube shocks were beat up from the steering and brake calipers hitting.

Installed a new little boot on the TC shifter.
