The Heavy duty frame option was the frame horn boxing and was a std.cj5 option at $16.07 in late 69.

Right. An orderable RPO would not likely be why the early Renegades were SSO.

I am going to go against the stream here a little bit, but I do not think that Renegades were SSO's. Mine did not come with one that is for sure. And I know of another R-II and one R-1 that did not have SSO's. It is my understanding that SSO's were for units that were ordered with something different then the normal model. Remember that the Renegades were just a model type and so if you did not order a Renegade model with something special, it did not have a SSO. But if you ordered a Renegade model with frame horn boxing, then it was a special order and got a SSO. If you ordered a plain CJ-5 with nothing special, then it did not have a SSO. But if you order it with something special and it was not a normal option for that model like frame boxing, special tires, etc. then it got a SSO. That has always been my understanding.

All the Renegade I and II and some of the early AMC era units were SSO, that's a fact, but the tag was so poorly attached that maybe only about 25 percent of the time is it present in current times. It looks like they used gorilla snot to attach them and the glue dries and gets very brittle, so the tag falls off as the Jeep bounces around. I recently shot a very nice and pristine original SC-1. It was windy when I opened the hood and I was shooting a detail shot of the SSO tag and "999" special paint tag.. and watched the tag fall off!! I secured it and made sure the owner knew it was rare unobtainium. I believe the SSOs on the Renegades differed... maybe by paint color. I'd have to dig out that file again to be sure. I have a couple of different numbers for each of those and the only apparent difference is the color. Lots to learn yet but it's clear the Rengades had SSOs through 1973. The option went RPO for '74.. and wimped out in the process. I don't remember having seen a number or a tag for a '72 or '73 Renegade, but I should look thru my pics to verify . If there are any '72-'73 Renegades out there that have a tag, would be grateful for the numbers!!

VERY cool that you are a Renegade II "plank owner" (if you catch the old Navy term) and the invoice is pure gold. I hardly EVER get to see those and really love it when I do. I'm sure many envy you over that Jeep and for your loyalty to it.

Thing is, the Renegades were SUPPOSED to have the tag and it should have a D5261 or D5267 number (the two I know about). Maybe yours didn't and there are a host of reasons why. It wasn't installed at the factory due to an error, it fell off at some point before you noticed, etc, etc. I have a little primary information on the Renegade and it all says they were SSO. A HD frame was a RPO, so that wouldn't account for an SSO. The closed rear body wasn't a RPO and neither was the special paint and stripes, so they would have been a part of an SSO BOM for the Renegade II.

Next question is what do the paint and trim tags say? If the paint is "999" that means it has the special paint. I wrote down Trim Code 340 for the ones I recorded but maybe there are others. Which color is it, by the way. Hey, I'd love to see some pics of your Jeep!

I never fail to be impressed with a person who buys something and keeps it for decades. THAT'S loyalty!

Sounds like a good deal to me. Let me figure out the loss of emotion tax and I will get back to you:rofl:

There is a interesting story behind that old CJ-2. I bought it from the old rancher that I was working for at the time. He told me that back in 1947 he decided that he needed a 2-1/2 ton Chevy stake truck to haul his cattle and grain in. Being very cheap instead of buying it here he caught a train and went back to Detroit and bought it there. When he got there he said he got to thinking that it would be nice to have a jeep for the ranch and being that far east already he just drove on down to Toledo and bought the jeep with a factory installed Korning PTO winch, had them load it in the back of the 2-1/2 ton and brought it home. He said that he paid $590 for it with the winch. When I traded in that CJ-2 for my R-II I kept the winch and bolted right up to my new Jeep perfect.

Yep, makes sense. What I am trying to do is determine if the SSO numbers were color specific. As I said, I have two Renegade II SSO numbers (D5261 and D5267) but I didn't think at the time to collect enough information to be able to apply features such as color to one number or the other. It didn't occur to me until later to do so. That's why I was hoping yours had a tag. But I'll keep looking! Thanks for posting the color chart withe the four 999 codes!

No, Cap, you have to convert to 2017 dollars. $4500 1971 dollars are $27,170 in 2017 dollars. Mike, you gonna take his offer???

My Renegade II has an SSO plate on the firewall, but the trim tag is missing. I don't know the number off the top of my head, and I won't be with the jeep until next week.

Decided to spend a little time Googling and immediately got a hit. Unrestored '71 Renegade II WITH the SSO tag and wearing Baja Yellow: D5262. My theory is that a Baja Yellow RII will have a D5262 SSR&O tag.

    Look Here" Tom's 1971 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade II | jeepfan.com

Is it Baja Yellow? If so, you can test my theory and tell us if it reads D5262

Still figuring out the loss of love and emotion tax. Problem is my calculator only allows numbers 10 digits long ($9,999,999,999) and the tax will be a lot higher then that, but when I get the tax figured out and add it to his offer, will see if he still wants it.:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Hey Mike, did you see the group coordinated by David at EWillys that is heading to Alaska in Jeeps from the 40's, 50's and 60's? It is the 75th anniversary of the Alaskan Highway. That are asking for photos and or stories of anybody that has done this trip in a Jeep!

There are five "999" colors shown, though these are likely AMC colors as this shows Plum.
