Very often in the TSM it says something like "use special tool J95/65-A" and you have to put something together to substitute. I did something like this when I replaced the bearings on my J20's T-18 -

here is the bearing puller I made:

    T18BearingPuller.jpg

I bought the "bearing separator" from Harbor Freight ca $30, which comes with two M16-1.5 tapped holes. Large Bearing Separator The jaws on this are pretty thick, and likely will not go into a bearing lock ring slot without some grinding, but you can put it behind the lock ring and pull on that.

I bought two 1-meter lengths of "low strength" M16-1.5 threaded rod from McMaster-Carr (ca $30) and four nuts from an eBay seller (ca $5). I had the piece of angle iron in my scrap pile. Drilling 9/16" holes for the rods and pilot tip required a big drill bit, so I bought the Silver and Deming bits from HF, and used my corded 1/2" drill. NB drilling holes this large in heavy steel is tricky/dangerous with a hand-held drill, since these big bits will grab with more force than you can counter with your muscles. With some care I was able to do it.

So, the bearing comes right off with this setup.

Jeep also specifies a special tool driver to drive the bearings home. I made this from 1 1/4" black iron pipe:

    T18OnBench.jpg

This works on both the input and output. I had to grind out the inside of the coupling to fit over the bearing seat; using a die grinder I enlarged the ID by about 80 thou. The coupling plus a 12" nipple and cap is enough length to slide over the long input shaft.

I have also made seal drivers from PVC pipe fitting before. Take the seal to the home center or hardware store and put together the pieces ou need to make the driver.

Anybody else have improvised tools to show?

I found this today. Glad I wrote on it what it was for (complete with drawing!), or it would have been in the kindling bin.

    Then there's the old 20-minute scrap-pile-meets-torch-and-welder hub puller. :D

    Where do I begin???

Heres one project. First, a hydraulic press I made up to remove the 2-½" pins from the 1893 bridge I bought and restored.

Below is the wrench I made for the bridge nuts.

The next pic is an alignment clamp for welding in new sections of the brace rods.

Also, I had to make up a 5000 PSI water blaster to prep the bridge for painting.
Adapted it to a six-cylinder Hercules industrial engine, propane-powered and mounted on a custom trailer.
Drive pulley is welded to a brake rotor bolted to the flywheel. Used a 1950 Willys pickup radiator, and the wheels off my old Jeep truck.

Hope this thread gains some traction good posts. All I could think of yet is some bolts I modified to help mate Fhead to transmission in vehicle. I loaned a set to a friend but had in my toolbox. Photo by a42pb

made this tool out of some stock to hold a carbide cutter to make splines on an axle. Worked but decided to get it done right since I don't have a super spacer

This "cable car" I built was needed to deliver a couple hundred 80# bags of concrete mix down over a 20' terrace and across the river.
The bottom has "bomb doors" that release remotely with a lanyard - making it a one-man operation from above.

Pete - looks like there's no thread left under that big square nut - just many coats of paint with memory of threads!

The gantry is cool - I put a chain fall like that in the roof of my garage, and built a truss to fit under the rafters. In the past, I've used a big pipe wrench to hold a pinion.

Done that, then used a floor jack under the handle to torque it.

    I've still got a '72 Daytona 500. Was your '73 a T100 C model?

TR5T (Trophy Trail) - I brought it back from England. They won a bunch of gold medals in the Interrnational Six Day Trials that year. Superb handling on dirt roads.
I had a Sixties "Speed Twin" 500cc over there too, an ex-police bike. Actually had a two cylinder distributor.

I have a 200cc Triumph Cub trials bike (dealer competition conversion) awaiting restoration. Also brung over from Blighty.

Speaking of special tools - can you say "whitworth?"

I am darn impressed when people do stuff like this. Just making a pressure washer out of an old engine is talent. You guys are awesome. I'm just happy when I can find all the tools I purchase. I used to make lots of jigs and fixtures when I had my wood shop.

Using it to access my pasture and garden. One of only two "Low Pratt Trusses" left in the state. Built before cars existed!

This may be a thread hi-jack but at least there's a Jeep in the picture, with the gravity-dump trailer I built from junk stuff.

Did you pour the abutments? Looks like you mixed it bag by bag.
