Any which way it was a pretty good day for me.

About a week or so ago i saw an ad for a WARN 8247 locally for $500. A little more than i wanted to spend and i had to save my money for a trip to Vegas. I go off to Vegas last week, come back Friday sick as heck, worked saturday, pretty much dead sunday, went to work monday but left to go see a minute clinic. They say i have bronchitis and the flu, then like flies, each one of the family members drop to sickness. Today i am home sick with the family, but i am coming out of the fog. I check craigslist again and see the WARN ad again and they dropped the price to $400. i sent an email and asked if he would take $375, he said yes and it turns out he was actually traveling to a doctors office close to my house and it was a quick run out to meet and get the winch. I heard him operate it over the phone. And too boot i got the latest JP magazine at the airport last Friday and it had a writeup on rebuilding the 8274.

I got it into the garage and started tearing into it and cleaning it a bit. Everything is there, i have the hand controller, nothing in the solinoid pack is burned. The motor had some serious goop covering the terminals and once removed the terminals looked brand new. Only slight issue i found is a aluminum tab for the top cover was cracked, but i am not so worried about it. The clutch lever is stuck. Here are pics, i will probably pull it apart more this week, or tonight. i am getting antsy sitting on the couch being sick.

Nice find. (You suck:D) Hope you feel better. It's hard for me to sit still and not dive in when I drag something home too. When the wife goes w me, theres a period of time after we return home that I have to feign indifference before I can dive in.

That's a relatively easy project. High return for the effort.

Well i opened it up. and pretty much closed it back. it was already gone through at some point and was clean.

There was some pitting on the gears, but it still looked fine. Even had nice clean oil in it. I played with the clutch handle a little bit and it came back to life. i added a little grease and it works fine. I resealed it and put it back together. Now i will make a mount and run it :)

Got the winch put on. I am glad it is on, i am tired of picking the thing up, it gets a tad heavy. I still need to wire it to the battery and run out the cable and respool it. And get two more bolts for the mount, the bolts i have are too long.

Those are good winches. Now you need to re spool it neatly before you catch some crap from a few members here.
    Good buy.

Somehow I knew you would say something like that. We all know how fun it is to find a PTO that fits his transfer case. We gotta go to hydraulic. Ask Wndyhill.

So wired it up and unspooled the winch. How much does a 8274 hold? IT was alot. Had my son as the hook puller and pulled it across the yard, and into the neighbors. The previous owner wound it the wrong way and i had to have the switch "pull in" to have the wire to come out. I respooled it the correct way. Bad thing is i have to replace the wire, there were alot of kinds and bad spots in it. now to find someone that has changed over to synthetic rope to get some newer wire.

I have about 180' of wire rope on my Koenig. No idea how much my brothers Ramsey has. We rewound it one afternoon and had well over 100' out and plenty of the 1/4 line was still on the drum.
One trick is to use a couple 2x4s clamped together to keep tension on the line as you wind it back up. I usually have one of them long enough to have it resting on the ground so you can pivot the thing to keep the wraps going on nicely.
