First, I assume you are thinking of the Holley-Weber kits that are imported by Redline, popular for the 258 - WEBER Carburetors distributed by Redline : Jeep

Shape, orientation is wrong. They are designed for use on inline engines. Note that Redline does not offer a V8 kit. Plus they are kind of small for a 304. You could make one of the 38-38 non-progressives work, but it would be a chore to adapt the linkage, and you would have to tune it for the larger engine. Plus you would have to come up with some kind of adapter to your 2V manifold.

Not impossible ... but not a practical choice, IMO. I'm not a fan of the Holley 2300 series carb, but they are a much better match to the 304 than the 38 DGES and such. A 2300 will bolt to your manifold, and likely will run out of the box. Holley 0-7448 350 CFM Performance 2BBL Carburetor - Holley Performance Products

The 2100 does not have the performance of the 2300, but it is a much better carburetor on the trail (without extensive mods of the 2300).

Really, don't mess with a replacement carb. Go fuel injection.

So far I have not been impressed with the 2100. The PO did a rebuild but may have messed it up. How much is one from autozone? I'll try anything, I'm so bumed out.

The 2100/4100 Motorcraft carburetors are probably some of the simplest and most reliable ones out there. There's just not that much to go wrong with them. Float Level, Power Valve, or Accelerator Pump Diaphragm are the most common things that you generally have to mess with.

Thanks for the information, I did not know much of that. Fuel injection would be sweet, know of any good write ups on it?
I'd have to do a junk yard fuel injection. I looked at the kits, they cost as much as I paid for my jeep!

This looks like a nice (economical) option, do they tell you
Where your vacuum lines hook up?

Any factory service manual will show you what goes to what. My 73 ren has Maybe 3 lines total.

I'd go with this garunteed carb suggestion as posted above. It'd be cheaper than auto zone. Looks like they have good reviews as well. Send it out and get to driving.

The main cost of the junkyard system is the research you must do to understand it and make it work. It's still going to cost a few hundred dollars in parts.

Look here - this is a budget build that uses the Megasquirt computer. Affordable DIY Fuel Injection for your IH - The Articles You can tune the Megasquirt with your laptop computer. Your other main option is to use the GM computer and hack the lookup tables in ROM to tune for your engine.

This is an extensive and wide ranging topic. The Megasquirt Megamanual pages will tell you a lot about how EFI works and how to make the Megasquirt work for you. That might be a good place to start, if you are serious about it. MSefi.com MegaSquirt Forum - Index page

Success!, guaranteed carburetors worked, I am now driving the Jeep.

Now to tackle the steering, it handles like grandpa's old pickup.

Sweet! I would suggest you have someone you trust with your life turn the wheel back and forth while you lay on the ground observing the steering. Watch for slop in the steering setup. You don't have to have it running if it is power steering. Just a little sawing of the wheel left and right is enough to diagnose most issues.

Maybe chock the rear wheels just in case your buddy can't be trusted.
