Master cylinder choice's

    I'm just gathering parts at this stage its way to cold out in the barn. I pulled a set of 11 inch brakes off an early 60's F-100 rear I had setting along one of the fence lines , it took an hour to find it in the briars and dig it out and drag it up to the shop. It came apart pretty easy with a lot of liquid wrench. As far as master cylinders go is there one that people like over another, I want to keep it non power on the frame 11 in drums on the back and discs on the front. Is there a bolt on dual circuit that fits the stock brackets , is there a reason to change, I don't mind adding fluid through the floor, just looking for options and opinions. Thanks T.J.

    Hello TJ,


    majority of people switch to a dual chambered master cylinder for disk brakes. It adds a set or redundancy to your brake system and updates to somewhat modern standards. Say your brakes have a leak or you loose one of the cylinder well you can stop still, theoretically that is.

    The two main ways of switching said master cylinder is: *note both are under the floor

    R&P seems like the way to go these days however check out both. This one is supposed to be the easiest to install.

    Focker recently wrote up a very nice disk brake swap that is stickied in the tech section. I would recommend checking his out. His doesn't cover the master cylinder swap on account his jeep is a 71. However the disk brake parts still apply. :)

    I went the route of pulling all the parts from an 85 CJ5. I pulled the pedal assembly, master cylinder and Dana 30 front axle. Pulling the pedal assembly puts the master cylinder up on the firewall. That would obviously be a much bigger project to move pedals around, brake lines, etc but it worked well for me and it's been worth it.
