I'm in a bit of a time crunch as my wife and I are relocating to Denver to start a graduate program on Sunday the 31st...

Does anyone in the Colorado Springs area have the tools necessary to pull and set new side bearings on a diff housing for a Dana 27?

I have all the necessary parts to complete the axle rebuild, but according to my service manual I just need these tools:

Puller 104B* with proper adapters (#39 adapter with SP 1100 for "Dana 27 side differential bearing")= "Tapered Roller Bearing Removing" tool, a steric denotes "Jeep exclusive tool." Tool for reinstall is C3716- "Driver- Differential Carrier Bearing."

Thanks so much for your help.

I wholeheartedly agree. If your axle is together and you have locking hubs then leave them unlocked and you're good to go.

I did a rebuild on my D30 and built a D44 full float. You can do it, but not if you don't have A LOT of spare time to get the equipment you need and the time to ask the right questions and get the answers. Its not like you can just yank it out, put new bearings and gears on the case and throw it back in and boom you're done. Some "special" tools can be made, modified, borrowed or substituted. I would not delve into this for a first time if you're rushed, so basically, what those guys said.

Thanks guys, but the axle isn't together. I took it apart under the impression that a local guy with a shop was going to help me...who had the proper tools and the know-how, then he backed out at the last minute.

I don't think at this point, I have much of a choice but to rebuild it before Monday.

put everything back together minus the axle shafts and tow it to wherever you need to go. when you get there do it correctly and take your time or your gears, bearings and maybe your case will be destroyed in short order.

Yep. You wouldn't really need to do anything other than get the brakes and hubs back on it. Leave the carrier/axles out and just remove the front driveshaft and put the cover back on it. Finish the job properly when you get relocated. You don't actually need a lot of special tools to do that job other than a decent dial indicator and an inch lb torque wrench but having those tools certainly makes it a lot easier.

How did you or who determined you only need the side bearings replaced? As mentioned, put it together so it will roll just like it was only 2WD and get it done properly when the time allows.

When the diff carrier was removed, much was revealed...one of the spider gear teeth was sheered off, needed inner axle oil seals, side bearings, bearing cups, etc. Thanks Glenn.
