Trying to figure out my engine, the PO told me that he dropped this into the '70 CJ5 several years back and that it was out of a Buick...but I can't seem to find any info on these particular numbers online...

    Thanks for your help...

There is just between the firewall and the carb three sets of numbers...

    "1378704-E"

    and

    "76 KO 4" over "991503"

There is also on the pass side of the engine "DSH 172" just between the sparkplug and exhaust manifold...

You will have to host the photos elsewhere and link them back here.

DSH 172 sez it's a 1970 225V6 9 to 1 compression ratio made on the 172nd day of the year. The manifold casting number sez it's a 2 barrel.

According to the FSM for the Dauntless V6 (the Buick originated oddfire) The DSH 172 would be D: domestic, S= year (1970 i think because mine is a 71 and has a "T" there) H = 225 V6 with 2bbl carb, 172 is the Julian date of the year made, so about june 21st.

    Walt beat me to it.

The block casting that will tell you more is behind the intake between the 'ears' on the back of the block (drops down and may be hard to see/find). The one you have first is still on the intake and not the block.

[h=4]From "Service Manual Jeep Universal Series";[/h]"The engine code number shown in Fig A-4 is provided to identify the Dauntless V6-225 engine. The meaning of the coded letters and numbers that are stamped on the right front face of the crankcase, just below the rocker arm cover, between exhaust manifold ports, is given below:
    Letter to designate market:

    • M-Military
    • E-Export
    • D-Domestic
    Letter to designate year Built:

    • N-1967
    • P-1968
    • R-1969
    • S-1970
    • T-1971
Letter to designate Engine Compression Ratio:

    • H-V6-225 9.0 to 1 C.R. (2bbl carb)
    • Y-V6-225 9.0 to 1 Marine (Low Profile) (2 bbl carb)
    • Z-V6-225 9.0 to1 Marine (High Profile) 2bbl carb
    • K V6-225 7.6 to 1 (2bbl carb)
    • L V6-225 7.4 to 1 (2bbl carb)
The next three numbers are then the day of the year noted in the second position.
