I'm a new member here, but certainly not new to JEEPs. I have my Dad's '65 Cj5a he bought new, as well as another '65 Tux hardtop.
Both of these '65s have the external rear top bow sockets, but no battery box cover in the cowl (a '64 still had the battery cover).
I recently picked up a '66 CJ5 V6 and it doesn't have the rear top bow sockets.
Does anyone know when the sockets finally disappeared?
Also, the '66 has the same dash as the '65s with the choke and throttle left of the speedo and ignition switch to the right, but a friend's '67 has the choke and throttle in a horizontal line on the left of the column and the ignition left of speedo.
    Thanks- Donny

My '66 Tuxedo does not have the bow sockets. It's completely original.

My '68 has the bow pockets on the fender wells, and the holes where the screw-on rear pockets sat on the body.

I have two 66s. One is an early serial number and it has the bow sockets (and the hood cut out). The other is a later serial number and it does not have the bow sockets or the hood cut out.

Mike R can speak to this better, but I believe the tooling for stamping/shaping the body panels simply wears out after X number of cycles. So it could be that these body features going away is evidence of improvements in the replacement tooling, once the Korean War era tooling wears out.

My current '66 has bow sockets, but my old '66 Tux did not. The replacement tub I bought in '69 did not. Maybe '66 was a transition year for the sockets. :iagree: with what Tim said too.

Does anyone sell the rear bow cj-5 socket?
Would you offer photos of where they are mounted, EXACTLY, with measurements?

I don't have mine anymore, but I still have the holes where they were bolted. I could measure those.
I'm not really sure that would help you much though.

The top of the socket is about 3/16" below the shelf and the outside of the socket lines up with the upper side of the tub and lines up with the other socket inside the tub.

Thanks to you both for the replies, great photo Walt, the steel for the original is LESS than 3/4 inch electrical conduit. I can have the I.D. tight on the tube that attaches to the W shaped thing that actually attaches to the body that Walt shows in the photo so there is no rattle. Is the whole part less than 4 inches tall and is the width wider than 2 1/2 inches where it attaches to the body and if you were checking is the steel unpainted 20 guage or thinner?

Walt could I trouble you for a straight down photo too?
