If I understand your post correctly you installed the rear adapter with no gasket? If so you need that gasket in there as it helps set mainshaft (output shaft) and rear bearing clearance. The gasket should have come with your kit. There should be a gasket for your front bearing retainer as well.

Got a gasket for the front retainer. Very thin one for the rear, after installing not enough clearance. Took some photos tonight, hope to get some more tomorrow, dig out laptop, resize images and post.
Thanks all for input, keeps me on track...

    More photos -

making a gasket for the rear transmission to transfer case adapter.

this was the best seal I found in my kit, and likely for the front retainer (very thin).

Cleaned the RTV off the adapter above, made an over-lay with a pencil and paper:

    carefully cut out the shapes:

overlay the overlay on the adapter for fit:

transfer the overlay to the gasket material:

    cut the shapes:

sprayed a little copper sealant on it:

    Mounting the transfer case:

The twin stick adapter is having clearance issues... angle grinder and a little at a time

    Missing a little meat:

    Mounted all pretty and nice:

and (note: shine here makes it look like I ground the case, and I didn't - just the stick mounts):

    Adding a backup switch:

I was torn which way to go here. I have two backup switches on the counter... T14 and T18. Virtually same, different connectors.

the hole is just shy of 0.500" (dunno remember the bit size at the moment).

    The threads are 1/4" NP.

I measured the end of the shift rod in reverse, and not in reverse. I placed the center of the hole so it engages on the last 3/8" or so of the shif rod.

I wanted to put it in the edge of the case, and that location impacts the breather some - but this will work for me.

    almost complete:

OH - yeah, good idea to get someone to help you lift this transmission off the bench and onto your rolling dolly...
It has to weigh in at 225 or more. Once I hugged it and had it in my arms, I was a little remiss to set it gently on the dolly on the floor... that's a lot of awkward weight to squat properly...

I need now to revisit the pictures of my e-brake...

I've got all but the pull rod in place / mocked back - but need to figure out how to re-attach the pull components.

OK, so it turns by hand in all gears, transfer case in LOW, HIGH, and ENGAGED / DISENGAGED.

Reverse, low (2wd/4wd) is a bit tough, but so is first... my weak hands, etc.

I can't test the OD range of motion yet as I have to fab a shifter to work with the twin sticks. Mine has bends in all the wrong places.

anyone have a picture or three of what they've done with their OD shifter path and the stick mount?

So - just fyi - if you lay the gasket material on and tap with ball pein hammer, you will get a dimple cut fit gasket. Minimal cleanup and your done...

GAH! That's too easy. Dang. Well. Meh. I guess I have a paper stencil now that I can be proud of...

And my razor knife skills... nimble.

WAIT > I optimized the space I had on the gasket to minimize waste... yeah. that's it...

I just realized I have about 233 images from this transmission, transfer case and warn OD puzzle.

It's done, except it's now leaking from the rear output under the e-brake.

disassembly and cleaning of parts and new dual-lip seals on the new to-do list.

Hey Dane, that turned out looking really good.
Did you use the #939994 insulator for mounting ?

When making an overdrive shift linkage for the T98 units I know of two good options.
Apparently your transmission case is a T18 case and not a T98 case.
The T98 cases have a couple of threaded bosses on the left hand side.
The T98 threaded casting bosses are in just about the perfect location for mounting an O.D. shift pivot bracket.

The next best option I know of for Overdrive shift lever mounting are the bosses on the T98 shift tower.
I can tell by the 2 bosses on the left side that you have a T98 shift tower.
T98 shift tower bosses can vary somewhat depending on the original application.
Your shift tower bosses look to be the M-715 variety.
Did you end up using the shift tower bosses to mount your Overdrive shift pivot bracket ?

    Ken,

    thanks for the great info!

It's still in the garage on the floor as I'm working on bigger brakes and some 'frame reinforcement' and 'crack fixin'.

I too have been eyeballing those bosses on the shift tower.

I bought some additional small steel to see if I can come up with a way to mount the shift lever.

The current lever presents me some design issues. It's like 1x1 square stock with a bunch of random holes drilled thru it to reduce weight and the link connector at the bottom.

I'm tempted to saw the bottom piece with all the holes drilled through it, then fab a new...

I don't know how much the lever needs for 'throw' on the bottom to move the rods, I'm thinking it needs to move an inch or so to get the proper 'in-and-out' on the overdrive unit.

The T98 case from an F134 CJ also has the two bosses on the right side of the case.
Like I say those case bosses are desireable for mounting a homade O.D. shift bracket.
But the T98 assembly from an F-134 CJ only has one decent and another funky (angled) boss located on it's shift tower.

The T98 shift tower from the M-715 (like yours) has two good bosses on the shift tower.
The M715 shift tower version is certainly better than the F-134 (T98-A) version for bracket mounting.
The M715 bosses are both parallel and in a pretty good location for homade O.D.bracket mounting.

I'll measure my standard O.D. shift lever parts and see if I can come up some fabrication specifications.

Measurements taken from an original Warn T90 /O.D. shifter.
OAL of shifter lever is about 20" .
That's measured as a straight shot and not including the bends.
The OAL of shift lever from center of pivot to the threaded end is about 17-1/2"
Again that's measured in a straight line without the bends.
From the pivot bracket CL of pivot point to CL of the shift rod is 2-1/2".
In other words it has a 2-1/2" throw.

Excellent to know. thanks for the info.

I'll take some photos of the two different shift levers I have to work with, one sounds about as you describe.

I have the old throw rod that was 'custom' built as well, but with the twin sticks it doesn't look like it'll work, but I can lop the ends off for pre-fab stuff (or look at it and eyeball new stuff.

I need some more time to spend with the Jeep... quality time.

but recently, my daughter and wife have been getting my quality time...

Honey-do lists getting quality time too...

    dang.
