I thought I would ask ,since my adapter excepts both dana18/20 transfer case, which would you guys use?

I have to completely rebuild the dana 18, so before I shell out money to rebuild it,thought I would see what you guys think.

Whether off set or not dose not matter, either will work.

Which would you rather have? Dana 18 or Dana 20?

The 18 I have is the 1971 large hole .

Take the 20 case and build a twin stick 18.. the 20 casing is a bit thicker than most of the 18's and you gain a twin stick so you can have 4wd hi/lo as well as 2wd hi/lo..

Yep the 18 is 2.43 or 2.46 :1 While the D-20 is either 2.0 or 2.03:1 ???? to many ratios in my head?........anyway Yes take the D-18 gear set out of a D-18 along with the offset drive and install it in a Large 4" Bore D-20 case.......makes a "Super 18" and still will accept the Warn OD................You might want to check your late Dana 18.......if it has a Large Bore may already be the heavier case, get the casting numbers off of it......................Nick Mil will know.

I forgot about the ratio thing... lol.. I knew I did it for another reason, but primarily because I kept cracking 18 cases between the PTO hole and the pan.. And destroying T-14's... I guess they were not meant for drag racing *sigh*...

That is the kind of info I was curious about.

I guess I should lay some stringers to build that area up.

And if you are still racing, at all,let me know anytime, I can weld up a chain drive for you.You are not to far from me.

And once I get the new welder.

I will for anyone on here, offer my service free of charge, (you just pay for shipping and parts, I will eat the consumables to a point :)....)for any tig welding needed.

And if not to far I will be able to be mobile.

I will do a real good post on my headers, and roll cage, and the Cab, That will at least let you see , some stainless, thicker gauge steel, and some thin sheet metal.

I have an old winters intake , that is cracked, that I am going to repair, then you can see some aluminum.

    just throwing that out.

Cant wait to get the new welder.

I already have every one wanting metal art LOL, from pin wheels, to flower boxes, to fences and battery boxes, to headers, intake manies .

My wife said if we are spending that much on a welder ,.. YOU! will build shi......., LOL

So, I need to keep it busy, until the sticker shock fades away in her little head LOL :)

Thanks Tomato, that was a long time ago when I first got the 5, I was a young dumb sailor with some money and no sense.. I was trying to drive the jeep like my friends in more modern machines, while I did beat a 4.2L wrangler, I broke things in the process.. Fast forward to now, it's an immovable object in my barn that has been following me around the US since my divorce in 05/06.. The bright side is that I did save it and it will get back in the shop this spring to start back on finishing it with it's current SM-420 and 18/20 hybrid and a much wiser driver.. lol

Chattanooga is a great place as small cities go.. My wife and I went to the zoo there this summer..

Jason Bunch from Tri-County Gear used to make a Dana 18 girdle. It captured the output where the OD was and the pan underneath. It wouldn't be hard to build your own. I've been planning to build one for my 20. It would add a little capacity if it was thick enough

Lane, you using this behind the big block? If so, at a minimum, use a late D20 case and the heavy Novak pan.

While I am fond of Warn OD's, their 300 ft lb rating may not fair well behind a 454 and you would be better off going with a TeraLow D18 gear set and a higher axle ratio and forgetting the OD. There are two main reasons I like D18's. The first is the low rear output which works better than any other T case in a short Jeep. The second is the OD option.

If you really want food for thought, look at this:
    http://homersgarage.wordpress.com/2...ations-or-how-to-make-60-year-old-stuff-rock/

I am not sure Homer's engineering is exactly what I had in mind, but I would still like to do one of these. The 1339 low range unit was used behind 401's and I'm going to guess it is about twice as stong as the overdrives. With any V8 and a D18 configuration, one of these would be having your cake and eating it too.

    Wow ! thanks man.

That was a great read, and a cool *** rig.

I doubt I will do the OD, but I will never say never, because, I am a complete flake when it comes to Ideas.
I abandon, Ideas all the time, But I also love building stuff.

I horse trade just about every day.LOL.

I am firmly committed to the old farm jeep sleeper now, and eventually will do a PTO and maybe a plow attachment on the front and rear, But I will build the chain unit my self.

    Maybe a winch also.

And if I did go with the OD, I would never romp on it, while in OD.But I want the lever, in the floor, so I cant say never.

It is a super 18 case by the way.

When I rebuild this thing, It is going to built on this site here LOL.So I will build it, to the specs, you TRUE!! jeep freaks suggest. :)

Going to use the existing clutch (11" Hays-actually have both the B&B and diaphram versions and will likely go back to the B&B), transmission (Auto Gear Equipment M22W-with nodular iron midplate), and D18 built as above with Teralows, and hopefully a full float 9". Going to give the overdrive a try but have my reservations about how long it will stay together-sort of an expensive stress test.

The 1339 low range unit and 3.07 gears would work a lot better and would have a 64:1 CR. The 3.07's would be right where I am at now with 4.10's and the overdrive. However, may get some funny looks telling someone you run 3.07's in a trail rig.

Auto Gear builds some interesting stuff, including a low output transfer case. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a low range.
