Well we/Alyssa just bought a 1965 CJ5 Navy Jeep. PO put new springs on and shackles but it is a clean Jeep and we are going to fix her up as a DDriver.

4 Cyl, 4:27 Gears, new head job/valve job done and the window opens out. I think it was used on the flight line side of the Navy.

Now we just have to tow it home and go through it.

That is way cool! Especially with the vented windshield! The Navy CJ5s are rare birds.

How much do one of these go for. It was originally yellow and she wants it back yellow.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Yellow would make it a flight line critter.

before you start it you need to stick hoses on the tubes that are on the oil filler and the dipstick and either put small airfilters on them or run the hoses to the oil-bath aircleaner.

Looks really good other that those two.

    Are those hoses pressurized ?

    Questions:

    1. Where does one get a new oil filter?

    2. What weight oil to run?

    3. Can I get a regular air filter to fit that canister?

    4. Where can I get new lines for the filter or are the standard?

    5. What engine/trans/t-case is in this (maybe I will know better once we get it home/get numbers etc)?

    Thanks,
    Jim

    How are these hubs ?

    Are they original ?

Will they hold up to 31" tires and mild offroad?

    Thanks,
    Jim

$1500 is a great price for the shape it's in.

Oil filters, & most other regular maintenance parts, can be had at any autoparts store.

Regular 10w-30 will work fine, many people recommend Shell Rotella-T, nominally a diesel engine oil but it has additives in it that would have been in regular oil back in the day.

The oil-bath air filter is permanent, wash it out with solvent & put oil in the lower cup to the "fill" line- these work better than paper filters.

Hoses are regular autoparts store stuff.

Engine is a 134 cu. inch "F" head, tranny will be a Dana T90, transfer case is a Dana D-18. rear axle should be a Dana 44, front axle should be a Dana 27.

The hubs are aftermarket, they'll be fine for 31" tires (that was pretty much the stock size)

Change the fluids, go through the carb, check the ignition points, if no bad parts it should start.

    Nice Jeep :)

Those hubs are fine on 31-32 inch tires , but parts are no longer available.

What's "original?" They may have been sold and installed by the dealer at time of purchase. Orr they could have been purchased and installed by the original owner. Jeep did not sell locking hubs on new vehicles before 1974.

All the Obvious...........Most people will want to put fuel in the tank and get a fresh battery and crank away but doing so can create more damage to your motor!
Change the oil in the pan........if you see water in the oil I would then take the head off...........take all the plugs out and use a light oil like a "Marvel Mystery Oil" turn the motor over by hand.........if it is not free then I would again suggest taking the head off as there may have been water leaked in there over the years and rusted the rings to the cylinder walls..............take your fuel system apart and that means everything .........get rid of any old fuel in tank.......if the fuel has turned to a smelly jell then the tank needs to be flushed, blow out the fuel lines with air......from front to back. I like to put a clear plastic fuel filter in line before the fuel pump to catch any debris that may be in the tank.
The carb will also need to be looked at as all the seals will probably be hard and not seal. Likewise once the motor is started the crank and front cover seals after setting for a long time may leak.

    Thank you.

New head job & I looked in the rad and it is holding fluid. Gas tank seems to have been drained but...

I also like the idea of the clear filter B4 the pump (I have that on the CJ8 since I do not have a sock int he tank).

Speaking of pumps, can these be rebuilt or do I need to find a new one (would like a new pump)-if so then where?

Thanks for all the tips guys and I can't wait to fire her up etc.

Question, what is this black box/hose? Is it fresh air intake?

    Thanks,
    Jim

    The hose itself is unobtanium.

I have been looking for that heater and hose for the better part of 4 years. Unobtainium is a good assessment.

It looks like a standard CJ5, not a M38A1, so Navy bouthg the standard model. It seems in good condition, it is more Spiderman Jeep than Navy.

There is a lot of checking to do, including electric wires. Parts are note expensive, replace all what you can.

On mine, we checked so many parts and change many. It had waited 3 years so no good.

Also we checked the valves. Then the engine was running like a clock, perfect. But it took a lot of time.

It will be a very nice CJ5.

How is this different from the fresh air hose that Walck's shows for the CJ-5/6?
