1 ton axles on 69 CJ5

    How do you have both tie rods connected on the passenger side?

    That is the problem isn't it?
    You can source the elusive double tie rod knuckle from a Jeepster front end like I did or Herm sells conversion tie rods and links.
    His kits come with a passenger side tie rod end that has a hole in it for the drag link TRE. I think they're available elsewhere too.

    The steering you posted looks like the stock Ross system. Might look in the sticky post about showing your Saginaw steering system. I think it's in the builds section. Also use the search function. Tons of info there. You can also get the double hole knuckle from early wagoneers and Jeep pu's with closed Knicks fronts. Also look at '71 and older IH Scout 80's and 800's as they can be used as well. Herm, R&P, Partsmike, all offer tie rods, drag links, tre's, and often the double hole knuckle.

    I do my best ;)
    They are getting harder to come by but the Jeepster is not the only source.
    Now the Jeepster Saginaw steering box mount could be considered elusive....

    It took a week end to swap mine out after reading all the posts an such here then getting all the parts ready.

    My $.02-

    First, get a factory service manaual- repriints are available from many venders

    Second, do a search here on "death wobble' that will tell you all you need to know about tightening up the stock Ross Box steering system. The Ross box will, if properly maintained, work as well as anything else for most activities.

    Third- If you plan to do anything "intensive" then you may be better off with a saginaw conversion for the steering- see the tech page on the main web site & do a search here in the forums for ton's of good advice on how to do it properly.

    Fourth- don't listen to anyone who reads too many magazines or hangs out on other certain not-to-be-named websites about what you need to build a decent jeep or you'll be running *5* ton axles, SoA , 12" lift, 60" tires & other assorted excesses that are *absolutely required* for any serious off-road activities involving getting across the speed bumps in front of the Dairy Queen for weekend munchee runs.

    This is the path my last TJ build took. Eventually I became tired of how bad it handled driving to the trailhead, and all our local trails lost alot of their challenge. I ended up selling it because it was a barely legal (I knew a guy) borderline trailer queen. Before you take advice from the "bigger, badder, more flex, 1 tons guys" on the other forums. Consider your ACTUAL intended use (and be honest) most of the world can survive on 1/2 ton axles and 35 inch or smaller tires if they are honest with themselves.

    FWIW, I am building a 1951 cj3a with 33's swapped in rear 44 (centered, flanged) and a front disc braked D30. I will be keeping the flathead motor and running 33's and lockers. I fully intend to run some moderate or better trails and struggle a bit in some spots, but I will have one hell of a good time doing it. This build will not spiral out of control as fast as the last one did......

    Most of that "advice" comes from internet tough guy,
